Geopolitical developments and wildfires in Canada, which could disrupt production, are helping to support oil prices despite concerns about oversupply in the second half of the year as OPEC+ is expected to increase production, said Tamas Varga, an analyst at PVM.
Adding to the downward pressure on prices, Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, cut its July crude oil prices to Asian customers to near two-month lows.
The price drop comes after OPEC+ announced plans last weekend to increase production by 411,000 barrels per day in July.
According to Reuters sources, the strategy of Saudi Arabia, the country leading OPEC, is partly to punish member countries that exploit over quotas, by gradually lifting the commitment to cut 2.2 million barrels/day from June to the end of October, to regain market share.
“The evolution of oil demand will depend on trade negotiations between the US and its partners,” said PVM’s Varga.
Data released on Wednesday showed the US services sector contracted in May for the first time in nearly a year.
In addition, the US Labor Department said the number of new unemployment claims in the week ending May 31 rose for the second consecutive week, indicating that labor market conditions are weakening as the US economy faces pressure from tariffs imposed by Mr. Trump.
The U.S. nonfarm payrolls report for May, due Friday, could influence the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy. Meanwhile, investors are also closely monitoring geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, according to UBS expert Giovanni Staunovo.
