Oil prices today April 25, 2025: Oil prices have recovered some of their losses as investors weigh the possibility of OPEC+ increasing production with mixed signals on tariffs from the White House and US-Iran nuclear talks.

Kazakhstan, which produces about 2% of global oil output and has consistently exceeded its quota over the past year, said it would prioritize national interests over OPEC+ in deciding production levels.

“Such a defection suggests a looser oil balance, but more importantly, it implies that Kazakhstan is effectively no longer a member of OPEC+, despite remaining in the alliance for now,” said PVM analyst Tamas Varga .

There have been previous disputes between OPEC+ members over compliance with production quotas, one of which led to Angola leaving the group in 2023.

“A deepening rift between OPEC+ members is a clear downside risk as it could lead to a price war,” ING analysts said. Signs that the US and China could move closer to trade talks have supported prices.

China called on the United States to cancel tariffs on Thursday, a day after the Wall Street Journal reported that the White House would be willing to reduce tariffs on China to as low as 50% to open up negotiations.

A prolonged trade war between the US and China could halve China's oil demand growth this year to 90,000 barrels per day (bpd) from 180,000 bpd, analysts at Rystad Energy said.

Meanwhile, the US and Iran will hold a third round of talks later this week on a deal that could restore restrictions on Tehran’s uranium enrichment program. Markets are watching for any signs that the rapprochement between the US and Iran could lead to an easing of sanctions on Iranian oil, which could bring supplies back to the market.

However, the US imposed new sanctions on Iran's energy sector on Tuesday, which Iran's Foreign Ministry said showed a "lack of goodwill and seriousness" in dialogue with Tehran.
