A group of young people have artistic dreams but face opposition from their families. |
When music is the main topic
“Flip Side 8: Vong Tay Nang” is set in a group of young people living in the harsh Central region, with a passion for music and a dream of becoming an idol, performing on a big stage. The main character is Tam, a 17-year-old boy, good at studying and talented in music. Tam and his friends form a band and register for a talent search contest. The group passes the “parking lot round” and has the opportunity to perform on a big stage.
While Tam and his friends were delighted with the great opportunity, Mr. Phuoc, Tam's father, strongly objected. According to him, if Tam pursued dancing and singing, it would be difficult for her to pass the university entrance exam and she would only be able to work hard on the sand dunes for the rest of her life.
In the journey to create the “Flip Side” brand, director Ly Hai has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to grasp the audience’s tastes and flexibly change the way of telling the story through each part of the film. However, in the 8th part called “Vong tay nang”, there is a remarkable turning point when music is no longer just a supporting element but has become an important “character” that contributes to conveying the message and emotions of the film.
This is a new direction, bringing a youthful breeze to the “Flip Face” brand, while expanding the audience to young people and music lovers. The appearance of the “idol” element is not simply a highlight of the character’s personality, but also reflects a trend of the times, when music and idol symbols have become a common dream of the Gen Z generation.
Regarding the film's message, director Ly Hai shared: "I believe that no matter what you do, where you are, who you are, how old you are, or in any situation, when you are happy, joyful, defeated, or disappointed in life, the most important thing is sharing, a hug that can soothe, a strong shoulder, a warm embrace that will make you feel protected and loved."
Movie about generational conflict
In this film, Ly Hai seeks a more complex theme than the previous films “Flip Side” when he delves into generational conflicts in the family. Specifically, the difference in viewpoints between three generations of grandparents, parents and children, each of whom is right in their own perspective.
When the grandchild asked if the grandmother had forbidden her parents from fulfilling their dreams, the grandmother replied: "In your mother's time, there weren't many choices to forbid." This also makes the children of today understand that their parents had a difficult childhood, with few options for the future, so they didn't dare to take risks with far-fetched dreams.
The conflict reached its climax when Mr. Phuoc asserted that the path he had guided Tam to take was the only path to success. Losing his temper, Tam raised her voice and asked indignantly: "If you really knew the path to success, would our family be so poor?"
The question hits directly at generational differences and trauma. Tam also longs to be able to decide his own future, something that his parents' generation seemed to not value too much because their childhood was immersed in the flames of war.
The trailer of “Flip Side 8: Vong Tay Nang” ends with the message: “Let the advice stop at advice”. Although the topic is not new, Ly Hai still aims to exploit it in a way that is suitable for the current context, that many young people have the dream of becoming idols and there are many doors open for them to follow that path, unlike in the past when there were very few opportunities.
And in the face of youthful ambition, who will ultimately have to listen to the other? And if the dreams of children are considered unrealistic, what chance do young people have and when will they be able to decide their own future?
“Flip Side 8: Vong Tay Nang” has early screenings from April 27-29, officially opening on April 30, 2025 at theaters nationwide.
