A VNA correspondent in North Africa quoted local media as saying that fighting between two armed groups took place throughout the night of May 28 and early morning of May 29 in the center of the Libyan capital Tripoli, injuring a number of people.

Clashes took place between two groups affiliated with the Tripoli-based, UN-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU), Al-Radaa Forces and Brigade 444. Armored vehicles were deployed in Tripoli on the afternoon of May 28 following the arrest of a member of Brigade 444, including in the commercial street of Jraba, east of the city, and in the residential area of Ras Hassan in the city center. After a lull of several hours, heavy and light gunfire was heard in the eastern suburbs of Tripoli, especially in Ain Zara, Fornaj and near the campus of Tripoli University, which the university's administration was forced to close on May 29 and suspend exams as a safety measure.

The Stabilization Support Agency (ASS) - an armed group responsible for security, intervened to end the clashes and attempt to mediate.

Libya has been mired in a prolonged political and security crisis since the 2011 coup. The North African country currently has two parallel governments: the GNU led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, recognized by the United Nations (UN), and the eastern government backed by General Khalifa Haftar. Libya has been unable to hold general elections as planned in December 2021 due to factions failing to agree on electoral laws. Earlier this year, Mr. Dbeibah said his government was ready to hold general elections in 2023.
