World's number one golfer makes a bad putt at Houston Open 2024

VnExpressVnExpress31/03/2024

Scottie Scheffler missed a putt from three inches on the final hole of round two on the PGA Tour, causing significant damage.

Scheffler’s misstep occurred on the 18th hole at the par-70 Memorial Park course, where the American golfer was expected to keep par after hitting the ball 1.5 meters from the hole. But his subsequent putt went off the left rim of the target, stopping three handspans away.

Due to subjectivity, he did not mark the ball to read the green and hastily putted again. This shot went over the rim, forcing the 27-year-old golfer to add a third putt to complete the final hole of the round.

The double bogey brought Scheffler's round score down to even par, while his tournament score remained -5, ending his journey to raise the mark after he shot 65 in the first round of the 2024 Houston Open, thereby achieving a streak of 28 rounds with a score of under par on the PGA Tour. This is a record in the US tournament system, according to statistics since 1983.

Scheffler said he was discouraged when he missed the first putt on the final hole of round 2. "I was a little disappointed because it was so close to the hole." On the second putt, which was closer but still missed, he said: "I hit it a little too fast so I didn't notice the unusual grass spot before the hole due to the soles of the previous groups' shoes." According to the rules, Scheffler has the right to touch up the area before putting.

Yesterday, before the double bogey on 18, Scheffler had several miscues, leading to three bogeys, including the third at 14 after hitting a creek on the left side of the fairway. A repeat of the water hazard at the par-5 16th caused Scheffler to slam his club into the ground when he saw his second shot bounce off the green into the lake. It cost him a one-stroke penalty and kept his par.

Thanks to five birdies, Scheffler made up for his mistakes, bringing his round 2 score to even par and keeping his tournament score at -5. With this achievement, Scheffler is in T4 after half of the Houston Open, while the leading position now belongs to defending champion Tony Finau with a score of -9.

Scheffler turned pro in 2018. Over the past two years, he has won eight PGA Tour titles. His most notable achievements include winning the 2022 Masters and defending his title at the 2024 Players Championship on March 17. With his victory two weeks ago, Scheffler is the only player in history to win back-to-back titles at the PGA Tour's most prestigious tournament. This week, he continues to top the world's professional men's golf rankings, extending his total time in the top spot to 81 weeks.
