On November 20, Alphabet - Google's parent company - opened its largest artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure engineering center outside the US in Taiwan (China).
Taiwan sees this as a signal that Google has confidence in the economy as a reliable technology partner.
Taiwan is home to TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker. TSMC's chips are widely used by companies like Nvidia, which are driving the global AI boom.
“The AI technologies developed and tested by Google in Taipei will be put into operation in our data centers around the world, which power the Google devices that billions of people use every day,” said Aamer Mahmood, vice president of platform infrastructure engineering at Google Cloud. “This is not just an investment in new facilities, but an investment in the entire ecosystem, affirming Taiwan’s position as an important hub for global AI innovation.”
Google's decision also helps the world see that Taiwan is not only an important link in the global technology supply chain, but also a key hub in building safe and trustworthy AI.
Taiwanese authorities have repeatedly warned about the risks of using Chinese-developed AI systems like DeepSeek, but China has dismissed those concerns./.
