Professor Hoang Chuong of Tuong and Bai Choi has passed away.

Professor Hoang Chuong was born in 1936, his hometown is Binh Dinh. He joined the cadet army and joined the Inter-zone 5 Art Troupe. He studied at the Soviet University of Theatre from 1962 - 1964. He was also a student of the 8th course of the University of Literature (1964 - 1967).

Professor Hoang Chuong was the Deputy Director of the Vietnam Tuong Theater, Director of the Vietnam Theater Research Institute, Director of the Institute for Research on Preservation and Promotion of National Culture (Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations). He was awarded the title of professor in 1996.

Professor Hoang Chuong has more than 20 published research works on the field of art theory and national culture such as: Traditional stage issues, Bai Choi and folk songs of Lien Khu 5, Northern Tuong art, Tuong and national martial arts. In addition, he has chaired and edited many ministerial-level works on national culture.

Professor Hoang Chuong has staged dozens of plays and dramas, many of which have won gold and silver medals at national professional theater festivals. He has also taught at many universities and has been invited by American universities to introduce traditional Vietnamese arts.

Professor Hoang Chuong was devoted to preserving traditional music and theater until the end of his life.

Professor Hoang Chuong has a life of research associated with musical heritage and traditional theatrical heritage. He researched and understood many types of music and traditional theater, however, his greatest research was associated with Tuong and Bai Choi. According to artist Mai Tuyet Hoa: "Professor Hoang Chuong is most clearly associated with Tuong and Bai Choi". In the last years of his life, Professor Hoang Chuong was associated with the Institute for Research on Preservation and Promotion of National Culture ( Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations ). From here, he had many activities to support the restoration of musical heritage and traditional theatrical heritage. Ms. Mai Tuyet Hoa added: "The Professor is the one who made great efforts to establish this Research Institute, so that many people who restore ancient capital can operate. In fact, the activities do not have any state funding, but to operate, a legal entity is needed. With his talent and determination, this unit was born".

For Ms. Mai Tuyet Hoa, the activities to restore and perform Xam, without the help of Professor Hoang Chuong, there would not be a researcher or a Xam performer like her today. "Professor Hoang Chuong is a great teacher," she said. Regarding recognition: Professor Hoang Chuong received the First Class Labor Medal in 2005. He was one of the 10 most outstanding scientists at the National Emulation Congress of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations in 2010. He was also a Hero of Labor in the renovation period in 2020.
