Hanoi proposes to revise planning of second airport to become international airport

Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan recently signed a document sent to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Transport (MOT) requesting to adjust the capital's second airport into an international airport.
The document clearly states that in the master plan for the development of the national airport and seaport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, the Hanoi People's Committee has requested the Ministry of Transport to study and supplement the planning of a second international airport of suitable scale, increasing the total capacity of the entire capital to 130-150 million passengers/year by 2050. However, in the national planning project to 2030, with a vision to 2050, which the Ministry of Transport is submitting to the Prime Minister, only Hanoi's second airport is identified as a domestic airport. Therefore, the Hanoi People's Committee requests the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Transport to adjust and identify the nature and function of Hanoi's second airport as an international airport. The Hanoi People's Committee also cited the example of the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area being planned for two international airports, including Tan Son Nhat Airport (Ho Chi Minh City) and Long Thanh Airport (Dong Nai) with a total capacity of 150 million passengers/year. Thus, the Hanoi capital region also needs to plan two international airports to meet corresponding transportation requirements, ensure aviation security and safety, reserve land funds and allocate transportation needs. In addition to the proposal to plan the second international airport, the Hanoi People's Committee also recommended that the Ministry of Transport study and determine the location and planning criteria of this airport as a basis for Hanoi to update and adjust the overall master plan. The adjusted master plan for the capital region approved in 2016 has oriented the study of the location of the second international airport, including the Ly Nhan area (Ha Nam), Ung Hoa (south of Hanoi), Thanh Mien (Hai Duong) and Tien Lang area (Hai Phong). The Hanoi capital region includes Hanoi and 9 neighboring provinces, with a projected population of about 21-23 million people by 2050, a total area of over 24,000 km2, basically similar to the Ho Chi Minh City region (population of 24-25 million people, area of about 30,400 km2).
