Hanoi to restore relief of late US Senator John McCain

(Dan Tri) - In order to preserve the historical and cultural values ​​of an event, Tay Ho district plans to restore and embellish the relief of the late US Senator John McCain on Truc Bach Lake.

The People's Council of Tay Ho District ( Hanoi ) has just reviewed and commented on the proposal to approve the investment policy and adjust a number of public investment projects in the area. This includes the project to renovate, restore and embellish the relief "Capturing American Pilot", also known as the relief of the late US Senator John McCain. Tay Ho District said the goal of this proposal is to preserve the historical and cultural values ​​of an event that took place in the area, creating a suitable space to promote the values ​​in the spiritual life of the people. The locality plans to adjust the position of the relief to the back, which is the railing around Truc Bach Lake, creating a larger space in front. This is to facilitate access and organize events.

At the same time, the district kept the original form of the relief, increased the size to fit the new location, and changed the relief material to monolithic stone. Remade the relief pedestal to be suitable, creating a place to place souvenir flowers. During the restoration process, the locality also repaved the yard area around the relief to create a relative separation between the relief area and the sidewalk; arranged and rearranged trees and flower pots in the area near the relief, added information signs, and a lighting system. The total estimated investment for this project is 1,903 billion VND, capital from the Tay Ho district budget with an implementation period of 2024-2025.

The memorial relief of the late Senator John McCain is located on the shore of Truc Bach Lake, Hanoi, depicting the image of McCain, an American pilot whose plane was shot down on October 26, 1967 while bombing the North and had to parachute into the lake. After more than 5 years in Hoa Lo Prison, Mr. McCain was released under the Paris Agreement in 1973. During his 6 decades of service to the United States, Mr. McCain spent 3 decades promoting relations with Vietnam, including making important contributions to the normalization of relations between the two countries. After returning to the United States, Mr. McCain returned to Vietnam many times to visit the relief that marked the event of him and his plane being shot down by the Vietnamese military and people. Mr. McCain passed away on August 25, 2018, due to brain cancer.
