News.com.au reported on December 17 that two scientists working at the University of Florida (USA) were arrested after their son told a teacher that he was afraid to go home because he did not want to be locked in a cage.
The two suspects, Dustin Huff (35 years old) and Yurui Xie (31 years old), were arrested on December 15, each being held on bail of $600,000.
After their son told the teacher, the school notified the agency in charge of families and children, before investigators came to search the home.
At the couple’s Gainesville home, police were shocked to find a wooden cage in the room of their 6-year-old son. Authorities said the child said he was locked in the cage all night until 7 a.m. when it was time to go to school.
The child also said that his parents kept him in diapers all night. According to some reports, the mother allegedly locked the child in a cage after school until the father got home. Their other child, now 2, was also locked in a cage inside a closet, where police found an upside-down crib.
The couple face charges of child abuse, including aggravated child abuse and child neglect.
Ms. Xie began working full-time at the University of Florida in June 2019, and Mr. Huff began working full-time at the school in December 2017. Both had previously worked part-time at the school.
Mr. Huff graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Florida in 2015, and his wife graduated with a master of science degree in horticulture in 2016. Both children are safe and with relatives.
