The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on August 15 that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin have just exchanged letters, pledging to develop bilateral relations to the level of "long-term strategic relations".

The letter exchange marked the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Korean Peninsula from Japanese colonial rule (August 15, 1945-August 15, 2023), which is also a national holiday in South Korea.

In his letter to Mr Putin, Mr Kim wrote that the friendship between the two countries was forged during World War II and was now “fully demonstrating their strength and invincibility in the struggle to smash imperialist hegemony and arbitrary acts.

"I firmly believe that friendship and solidarity will increasingly develop into a long-term strategic relationship in line with the requirements of the new era. The two countries will always achieve victory, strongly support and cooperate with each other in the process of realizing common goals and causes," he wrote.

Last month, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu joined North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in watching a military parade featuring the latest nuclear-capable missiles and attack drones in Pyongyang, according to Reuters.

In a letter to the North Korean leader, the Russian president also pledged to strengthen bilateral relations.

"I am sure that we will strengthen bilateral cooperation in all areas for the happiness of the people of both countries as well as for the stability and security of the Korean peninsula and the entire Northeast Asia region," according to Mr. Putin.

The Russian President congratulated the Korean Peninsula Liberation Day and wished health and success to the North Korean leader, as well as happiness and prosperity to all Koreans.
