On April 17, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin about a surprise inspection of the Pacific Fleet.
According to TASS news agency, more than 25,000 servicemen, 167 warships, including 12 submarines, 89 planes and helicopters are participating in this surprise inspection (starting from April 14). Minister Shoigu said that these forces and units are in a high state of readiness to carry out training tasks. Tactical exercises and test firing are being carried out.
According to Minister Shoigu, the Pacific Fleet forces are conducting the second stage of a snap inspection. A naval task force set up in a distant sea area is moving to the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk, carrying out combat maneuvers and handling underwater situations. A tactical air defense exercise has begun.
On April 14, Defense Minister Shoigu instructed General Nikolai Evmenov, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, and the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces to conduct surprise inspections of units assigned to the Pacific Fleet.
As part of the surprise inspection, formations and military units of the coastal forces and marines of the Russian Pacific Fleet were alerted, put on high alert and began marching to assembly areas.
Pacific Fleet warships, boats and support vessels leave their deployment points for designated areas in the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea to conduct combat training missions, tactical exercises and joint operations. Anti-submarine warfare forces on standby conduct searches for enemy submarines as part of a snap combat readiness inspection.
