On March 12, a senior official of the Hamas Islamist movement said that the group has accepted the US's revised proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The source confirmed to Al Arabiya that Hamas representatives are expected to travel to the Egyptian capital Cairo in the coming days to discuss the final details and implementation of the agreement.
On the same day, the US called on Hamas to release hostages being held in Gaza, including women, the elderly and the wounded, and accept a temporary ceasefire with Israel, to create the premise to ensure a more permanent ceasefire agreement.
“We are trying to achieve a ceasefire that lasts at least six weeks to exchange hostages and then work to build a more lasting agreement,” if Hamas agrees to release women, the wounded and the elderly, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters.
However, Mr. Sullivan did not make any predictions about this possibility.
Israel has accepted the terms of a six-week ceasefire in exchange for the release of several hostages held by Hamas since an October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel that killed 1,200 people.
Hamas has said it will only accept a deal based on a permanent ceasefire to end the conflict and include an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, rather than a temporary truce. Under the latest proposal, Israel would release 10 Palestinian prisoners for every one hostage held by Hamas.
The deal will also provide for the gradual return of Palestinians evacuated from Gaza, the source said.
