Health authorities will still recommend that infected people self-isolate for five days but it is not mandatory.
"I am glad that people will be able to resume normal life after three years and four months," President Yoon Suk-yeol said in a televised meeting with government officials and medical workers to mark the downgrading of the crisis level from the highest level 4 to 3.
The requirement to wear masks in all medical facilities and pharmacies will also be lifted, with masks only being mandatory in hospital patient areas.
President Yoon Suk-yeol added that the government will continue to provide financial support for Covid-19 testing and treatment "for a while."
Last week, the World Health Organization declared an end to the global emergency over Covid-19, which had been in place since January 30, 2020. With a population of 52 million, South Korea has had about 31.3 million Covid-19 cases and 34,600 deaths, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
