South Korea has the best 5G infrastructure in the world

As of 2023, South Korea's 5G infrastructure is ranked No. 1 among economies , including China and the European Union (EU). South Korea also ranks No. 2 in the number of 5G users.


On November 20, the Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea (MSIT) said that Korea's digital infrastructure is rated as the best in the world in the "Digital Economy Outlook Report 2024" released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The report shows that as of 2023, South Korea's 5G infrastructure will rank No. 1 among economies, including China and the European Union (EU). South Korea will also rank No. 2 in terms of the number of 5G users.

South Korea has the highest number of base stations per 100,000 people at 593, followed by Lithuania (328) and Finland (251). The average for OECD members is around 100. The United States has the highest number of 5G connections per 100 people at 68.4.

South Korea is next with 63 lines, followed by Finland (58), China, Australia (both 57) and Japan (56). Meanwhile, the OECD average number of 5G lines is 38.6.

According to analysis in the report, demand for high-quality broadband services is increasing as digital transformation projects continue to take place in each country and investment in the telecommunications sector in the OECD has increased by 18% over the five years from 2018-2023.

The number of mobile broadband subscriptions in the OECD area has more than doubled in the 10 years since 2013, reaching 1.86 billion.

MSIT said the cost of the three-pack of high-speed Internet, landline phone and TV in Korea is also considered the cheapest.

Minister Yoo Sang Im said that through the assessment from the OECD, it can be affirmed that Korea's efforts and achievements in building digital infrastructure are at an extremely positive level.

Korean authorities will continue to strive to build an innovative network environment and establish a secure digital ecosystem.
