Many Vietnamese newspapers and news sites were inaccessible for hours.
Cloudflare has confirmed the outage and said it is still investigating. The company said it is investigating a serious server issue that caused widespread disruption to many popular platforms and websites, including ChatGPT.
Many electronic newspapers and websites in Vietnam "crashed"
Many users in Vietnam reported being unable to access some newspapers, websites, especially ChatGPT and social networks like X. Similarly, applications like Canva, as well as PayPal and Uber Eats, were affected by disruptions to payment and ordering transactions.
According to the reflection on the problem tracking page Downdetector, error reports started appearing from after 6:00 p.m. ( Hanoi time).
Meanwhile, in Vietnam, many electronic newspapers and websites have been affected in terms of access, such as: Cong Thuong, Thoi Bao Ngan Hang, Thuong Truong magazine, Petrotimes, Tinh Te social network, Thuong Vien Phap Luat website, etc.
A series of international websites also crashed.
According to the Guardian newspaper on November 18, an important part of the global Internet infrastructure encountered problems when Cloudflare - an American technology corporation that protects millions of websites from cyber attacks - suddenly crashed its service, causing many websites around the world to be inaccessible and error messages to appear simultaneously.
Several major platforms, including X, Canva, ChatGPT, Perplexity… reported increased outages around the time Cloudflare was down.
Cloudflare confirmed the outage, saying the issue occurred when an "unusual" surge of traffic hit one of its services, causing some of the traffic going through the system to fail and leaving many users unable to access the site.
The company said its team is continuing to investigate a serious server issue that caused widespread disruption to many popular platforms and websites.
In a later statement, Cloudflare said: "We have applied a patch and believe the issue has been resolved. We will continue to monitor to ensure all services return to normal."
Professor Alan Woodward of the University of Surrey's Cyber Security Centre describes Cloudflare as "the biggest company many people have never heard of", acting as the "gatekeeper" of the internet. Cloudflare not only protects websites from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, but also inspects traffic and verifies users are real, helping to ensure the stable operation of millions of online services.
The incident comes less than a month after an outage at Amazon Web Services caused thousands of websites, including Reddit and Snapchat, to go offline.
According to Mr. Woodward, these incidents show that the global Internet infrastructure is heavily dependent on a small number of technology corporations, and if just one of them has a problem, the impact can spread immediately. However, he said it is unlikely that this is a cyber attack, because large-scale systems like Cloudflare usually do not have a single point of failure.
By about 10:40 p.m. Vietnam time, some affected websites had gradually "come back to life" after many hours of paralysis.
