At the National Children's Hospital, a breast milk bank was established in March 2022, receiving and processing about 350 - 400 liters of donated breast milk each month. This amount of milk provides nutrition for newborn patients being treated at the hospital.
According to the National Children's Hospital, the breast milk bank was established with the aim of providing adequate and timely breast milk for sick, premature, and underweight babies from donated breast milk. In fact, at the hospital, many babies have serious illnesses since birth and do not have a source of nutrition from breast milk. The breast milk bank is responsible for collecting, screening, storing, and distributing breast milk.
After collection, donated breast milk will be carefully selected and screened for pathogens such as HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, etc.; then pasteurized and preserved according to strict standards, to ensure the milk source is always hygienic and retains maximum nutrients.
According to the Ministry of Health , breast milk is best for the comprehensive development of infants and young children. Of the approximately 41,000 premature babies and 54,000 low birth weight babies born each year, an estimated 35,000 need pasteurized donated breast milk, with a demand of approximately 100 liters per day. If operating at maximum capacity, breast milk banks can pasteurize 102 liters of milk per day, ensuring the ability to provide enough pasteurized breast milk for at-risk children nationwide.
