On October 7, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital, confirmed that the hospital's doctors had just delivered an "unexpected" baby for a woman near her home.
Accordingly, at noon on October 6, while preparing to go to work, Dr. Le Hoang Khai - Head of the Pediatrics Department of Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital - suddenly heard a loud cry "Doctor, my wife is giving birth" from a neighbor's house about 20 meters away from his house.
Dr. Khai quickly grabbed a pair of medical gloves and quickly ran to the house of pregnant woman NKM (43 years old, living in Bac Lieu ward, Ca Mau province), who is also his neighbor. Here, he saw the baby almost completely out but not breathing, with its mouth full of amniotic fluid.
He quickly delivered the baby, cleared the airway, stimulated and warmed the baby. After a few seconds, the baby cried, weighing 3.1kg.
When the situation stabilized, Dr. Khai contacted the emergency team of Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital to assist in cutting the umbilical cord at home and take the mother and child to the hospital for further monitoring. By noon today, October 7, the health of both mother and child was stable, the baby was breastfeeding well, breathing regularly, and was expected to be discharged in the next few days.
According to Dr. Le Hoang Khai, situations of giving birth outside of medical facilities pose many dangerous risks for both mother and child such as respiratory failure, hemorrhage, postpartum asphyxia, infection, etc. Therefore, pregnant women need to have regular prenatal check-ups, closely monitor the expected date of birth, and go to the hospital early when there are signs of labor to receive timely support from the medical team.
