Purple onion is the main crop that brings a stable life to the Khmer people in the coastal area of Vinh Chau. This year, the whole Vinh Chau town planted over 5,400 hectares of onion. Up to this point, farmers have harvested about 4,000 hectares. Thanks to favorable weather and reduced pests and diseases, purple onion grows well, with high yield, from 20 - 22 tons/ha.

Samaki Agricultural Cooperative in Vinh Hiep Commune (Vinh Chau Town) is one of the pioneers in organically growing purple onions. This crop, the Cooperative cultivated 17 hectares, of which 3 hectares were grown organically, with 342 tons of purple onions certified by VietGAP.

Purple onions are being bought by traders for 18,000 - 22,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Thach Dil, Deputy Director of Samaki Agricultural Cooperative, said that thanks to organic farming, growers have reduced many investment costs. In particular, thanks to production linkages, product consumption is very favorable, with selling prices 5-10% higher than the market. The cooperative's purple onion products are now available in supermarket systems in the province and the Mekong Delta region .

Currently, traders buy purple onions at 18,000 - 22,000 VND/kg, although it is down about 5,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year, but in return the yield is high. After deducting costs, growers make a profit of 10,000 - 12,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Ly Bo Ruol (60 years old, living in Vinh Hai commune, Vinh Chau town) said that this year his family cultivated 7 hectares (7,000 m2 ) of purple onions. Thanks to organic farming, the plants grew well, the tubers were firm, the color was beautiful, and the yield was 30% higher than the previous crop. He calculated that with the current selling price, his family would earn a profit of about 20 million VND/hectare.

According to Mr. Ruol, in recent years, he and Vinh Chau farmers have planted shallots in separate seasons. Therefore, when the harvest season comes, there is no longer a situation of congestion and price drops like before. Along with that, thanks to promoting production linkages and product consumption, the output is more favorable.
