"Breaking out of the cocoon" to fly high
Studying at Quoc Hoc Hue High School for the Gifted - a famous school in the Central region, but when he joined VinUni University, Cao Gia Bao said: "I was shocked!"
The first was culture shock because I was used to a very slow and quiet pace of life in Hue, while at VinUni, everything was bustling and exciting. Bao felt even more pressured by his peers. Especially when looking around, he saw that his friends were all so talented and dynamic. However, Bao soon realized that “plowing” to get good grades was not what he really wanted and was not what VinUni required of its students.
Bao chose to relieve stress by writing a long post on his personal Facebook page. The post unexpectedly received a lot of encouraging responses and shares from friends. The student quickly regained his spirit, and found what he was truly passionate about and wanted to try. That was web development.
Bao decided to challenge himself by locking himself in his room and spending almost 24 hours a day studying. The 3-month course with more than 100 lessons was completed by Bao in just two weeks. The “super-fast” course also helped Bao clearly recognize his own abilities and strengths and helped him become more confident.
“More importantly, I realized that what I really wanted was to create a social impact that was valuable to the people around me,” Bao shared.
Studying at an international school with a standardized program, Bao said that the specialized knowledge provided to students is very systematic. But it does not stop there, VinUni is also a training environment, helping students have outstanding skills, leadership ability and strong inner strength.
“The school’s training orientation is practical training, creating opportunities for students to do a lot, fail a lot, fail quickly but also grow up very quickly. I learned that lesson right from my first year in the journey to overcome my own barriers and the more I got to my final year, the more I understood it,” Bao said.
Participating in a startup project with a friend in his second year of university was also when Bao realized his own skill “gaps” such as: time management skills, communication skills, presentation skills, etc. The skill weaknesses became more obvious when Bao interned at a software company in his third year. The software errors and the way he presented made it difficult for other employees to understand.
The second shock when stepping into the real-life environment helped Bao realize that he needed to improve himself even more. “The 6-month internship changed me a lot, showing me the role of soft skills and that I had to master those skills,” Bao shared.
In his fourth year of university, Bao continued to receive another great lesson in management skills and responsibility for assigned tasks. That was when VinUni assigned him the school's website upgrade project.
As a final year student, Bao had to spend a lot of time studying and working on his graduation project. Meanwhile, the website upgrade project involved many departments, a large amount of work, requiring multi-party coordination and fast progress. Despite working hard day and night, Bao still could not complete the required progress. And Bao once again chose to… hide himself in a cocoon.
“This is also the stage that shows me that VinUni is an environment full of love, where everyone is always ready to support. I understand that not every place is patient enough to give me lessons and second chances like that,” Bao said emotionally.
Aspiration to develop homeland
Gia Bao today has completely "transformed" compared to the student at Hue National School 4 years ago who was bewildered when entering VinUni.
My thoughts and life goals have changed. If in the first year, Bao said, he only dreamed of working for a big company, now his goal is to become an individual who has an impact on society. The criteria for choosing a workplace is that the company's values must match that goal.
No longer the young man who was afraid of difficulties and pressure, Bao today is full of inner strength and confidence after experiencing many failures. From not daring to dream of stepping out into the world , Bao is ready with the goal of creating value not only for himself but also positively impacting and changing society.
When talking about his spectacular “cocoon breaking” achievements, Bao always mentions VinUni with deep gratitude. Bao said that his 4-year journey at university has given him so many valuable lessons.
“I am extremely grateful to my teachers and friends at VinUni for always loving, encouraging, motivating, and giving me opportunities that I never thought I could have, and “molding” me into the person I am today: Confident, full of inner strength, and eager to contribute,” Gia Bao said.
Now, Bao is preparing to embark on a new journey on a more distant horizon. Bao was accepted as a research engineer at Nanyang Technological University Singapore - NTU before graduating. Sharing about the future, the Hue boy revealed that he and his close friend are planning to establish a business to help his hometown develop its economy more strongly.
“I want to open a company with a system of ideological values, having a positive impact on students and people in Hue, how to preserve Hue's cultural identity but also have to change the lifestyle slowly day by day because that is a waste of resources. Wanting to bring a better life to everyone is also the spirit I learned at VinUni, must always innovate, and I want to bring change to Hue”, Bao said confidently and excitedly.
