On the afternoon of March 7, at the Soviet Nghe Tinh Museum, students in Vinh City participated in the experience program "Preserving the soul of the homeland's conical hats" with artisans from Thanh Tai conical hat village, Dong Van commune, Thanh Chuong district, Nghe An .

Here, children can experience the steps in the hat making process such as: peeling coconut leaves, straightening the leaves; sewing hats, brushing oil on the hats; threading the hat straps...

The craft of making conical hats in Thanh Tai village has existed for hundreds of years. Although it is a secondary profession, existing alongside farming, it plays an important role in ensuring the livelihood of the people here. Nowadays, although it has been largely lost, the craft of making conical hats is still preserved in this locality.

With 35 years of experience in the profession, artisan Hoang Thi Dung (54 years old, Thanh Tai conical hat village) said that to make a complete hat, the maker must go through many stages, from making the brim, making the brim, attaching the mold, threading the leaves, sewing, webbing the feet to threading the cradle, oiling... "Each stage of making a hat is done by hand so it takes a lot of time. A professional hat maker can only complete 1-2 hats a day," the artisan shared.

According to artisan Hoang Thi Huong (46 years old), making conical hats is not difficult but requires perseverance and meticulousness in each step. After being pressed, the leaves are trimmed at both ends long enough to cover from the top to the brim, stacked together, without shifting. Each hat is covered with 2 layers of leaves, between the 2 layers is an additional layer of bamboo leaves to make the hat thicker and stronger, to prevent it from getting wet in the rain. A beautiful hat must ensure a flat roof, smooth stitching...

The conical hats will then be given life by artists from an art studio in Vinh City through vivid drawings such as lotus flowers, chrysanthemums or landscapes of the homeland and country to enhance the beauty of the conical hats.

Le Tran Quynh Anh (6th grade student, Quan Bau Secondary School, Vinh City) shared: “This is the first time I have experienced making conical hats. I feel very excited and delighted. I will give this conical hat to the people I love the most, my grandmother and mother, on International Women's Day, March 8th.”

“Preserving the soul of the homeland’s conical hats” is one of the attractive and meaningful experiential programs, contributing to spreading the love for the homeland through learning about traditional craft villages, helping students appreciate more the products imbued with the cultural identity and people of Vietnam.
