The workshop was organized by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Nam province in coordination with the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) and the People's Committee of Ly Nhan district, in the atmosphere towards the 110th anniversary of the birth of writer Nam Cao (October 29, 1915 - October 29, 2025).
With nearly 50 presentations from experts, scientists and managers, the workshop focused on clarifying the role, value and potential of cultural heritage associated with the name of writer Nam Cao - who is considered a monument of Vietnamese critical realism literature. At the same time, delegates also made many practical proposals to develop cultural and literary tourism in a sustainable, creative and community-based direction.
The workshop was organized not only as an opportunity for us to explore the depth of thought and unique artistic style of writer Nam Cao, but also as an opportunity for us to listen to passionate opinions from many perspectives.
Nam Cao, whose real name is Tran Huu Tri, was born in Dai Hoang village (now Hoa Hau commune, Ly Nhan district). He is not only famous for his classic works such as: Chi Pheo, Song mon, Doi mat..., but also a staunch revolutionary soldier, a devoted journalist, who sacrificed his life in the resistance war against the French. He was posthumously awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts (first term - 1996).
After many changes, Nam Cao’s hometown – Hoa Hau commune, Ly Nhan district – is gradually becoming a vibrant cultural heritage space. From the tomb and memorial house recognized as a National Monument in 2023, Dai Hoang fish sauce craft village, to the system of traditional festivals and unique folk customs… all are creating a multi-layered heritage ecosystem – where traditional identity is preserved, while opening up creative opportunities in a modern context.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong - Director of the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism spoke at the Workshop.
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Ngo Thanh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Nam province, affirmed: "Honoring writer and martyr Nam Cao is not only a meaningful event for the culture of Ha Nam province, but also an opportunity to affirm the position of Vietnamese cultural heritage in the flow of global integration".
The workshop was divided into two main sessions. The first session focused on identifying the current status of protecting and promoting the value of cultural heritage in Nam Cao’s homeland, including issues of management, investment, and community awareness. The second session was where scientists and local representatives proposed solutions – from building a tourism model associated with literature, applying digital technology to developing human resources and policies linking three parties: State – business – community.
Dr. Architect Nguyen Thu Hanh – President of the Association of Sustainable Tourism Development Sciences – presented a remarkable paper, introducing the initiative “Vu Dai Village Tourist Area of the Past” – the first cultural tourism model in Vietnam exploiting the value of literary heritage. This is also a project that has won many awards for architecture and planning, highly appreciated for its creativity in preserving and promoting heritage associated with sustainable tourism development.
Overview of the scientific workshop on promoting the cultural heritage values of Nam Cao's homeland.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong - Director of the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism affirmed: "This place will not only become an attractive destination for domestic and international tourists but also gradually realize the vision of becoming "the world's leading local cultural destination" as some researchers and journalists have expected."
The workshop is also an opportunity to connect researchers, management agencies, tourism businesses and the community – the subjects directly involved in preserving and exploiting heritage. This is also a step to concretize the major policies of the Party and State on developing culture associated with sustainable tourism in the current period./.
