Grown from hardship

In December 1945, the Provincial Party Committee was established, named Tay Son Party Committee. From then on, the need for a revolutionary newspaper to disseminate the policies of the Provincial Party Committee and the direction of the Viet Minh Front became an urgent requirement. To strengthen information and propaganda, the Gia Lai Provincial Party Committee decided to publish the Sang newspaper on March 16, 1947.

Born quite early compared to local Party newspapers in the Central Highlands region, Sang newspaper was not only a sharp weapon of the communists in propagating, awakening, and enlightening the people to follow the Party's call, fighting for national independence, but also spreading Marxism-Leninism,educating class consciousness, communist ideals for cadres, party members and working masses to join the entire Party, the entire army, and the entire people to achieve victory in the two long-term resistance wars against the French colonialists and the invading American imperialists.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thai Thuong - former Head of the litho printing group (reverse printing on stone tablets): Back then, during the military trips to move work locations, he and his colleagues had to carry along the lithographs and newspaper printing rollers, which was very heavy and tiring. None of them had any journalism experience, they only studied and studied some newspapers of Inter-zone V and the Central such as: Cuu Quoc, Tap Ao Xam, Nhan Dan and wrote and edited based on the propaganda needs of the province. However, the appearance of the newspaper was still acceptable and it was published regularly 2-3 times a month...

Each page of hot news about the war that had cost so much blood and tears reached the hands of local cadres, soldiers and civilians. Journalists and newspapers born in Gia Lai during the two resistance wars became “loyal secretaries of the times”, recording historical events, encouraging and motivating the people of all ethnic groups in the province to rise up and defend their homeland. This is also the outstanding common feature of Party newspapers in Gia Lai operating during the war.

After the liberation of the province (March 17, 1975), Gia Lai started to restore the socio-economy , strengthen security and defense, and create a foundation for advancing to build socialism. The task set for the local press in the period of 1975-1986 was to promptly propagate and bring the resolution into life, making cadres, party members and the masses deeply aware and enthusiastically respond to the revolutionary movements launched and organized by the province. In the heroic atmosphere of urgent construction and development, November 10, 1976 marked an important milestone in the traditional history of the Radio-Television (PT-TH) sector of Gia Lai. That was the first radio program of Gia Lai-Kon Tum Radio Station to be broadcast.

Entering the period of national renewal, press agencies in Gia Lai have focused on propagating the implementation of the resolutions of the Provincial Party Committee on developing economic sectors; strengthening the work of building the Party, government, Front and mass organizations as well as strong armed forces; building the great national unity bloc, fighting against reactionaries, resolving the FULRO issue; protecting border safety; strengthening the fighting strength of the armed forces; gradually stabilizing and improving people's lives.

Mr. Tran Liem, former Director of the Provincial Radio and Television Station, said: “In 1993, the Provincial Radio and Television Station had fully formed both the Radio and Television Department. Radio continued to develop, while television at that time was mainly a rebroadcast of Vietnam Television, producing only 2 programs/week with a duration of 15 minutes/program. After a while, along with investment in content, the Provincial Radio and Television Station was equipped with means and machinery, so it gradually grew, contributing to the good implementation of assigned political tasks.”

Gia Lai Newspaper and the provincial Radio and Television Station have now been merged into Gia Lai Newspaper to work with the central press agencies to play a good role as a bridge to transmit information; effectively promote the mission of revolutionary journalism, strictly implement the leadership, direction, and orientation of information, create social consensus and people's trust in the Party, the State, and the renovation process. At the same time, the press is also a bridge for people of all walks of life to reflect issues of concern; a place to express their thoughts and aspirations so that all levels and sectors can grasp and promptly resolve them.

Journalist Do Tan Hien - Reporter of Vietnam Television Center in the Central Highlands (VTV8) shared: "With the assigned responsibility, I always want to accompany the locality to convey information and images of the land, people, and unique culture of the Central Highlands people in general, Gia Lai in particular, to friends at home and abroad. Along with that, reflect the remaining problems of society to contribute to the locality's struggle, construction and development".

In nearly 20 years of working as a journalist, journalist Nguyen Vinh Hoang (Gia Lai Newspaper) has made many trips to work in most localities in the province. He is often present in the border areas, coordinating with local Party committees, authorities and Border Guard stations to carry out many topics and press publications that are full of life. Journalist Vinh Hoang said: "The Border Guard brothers consider us as family, very close. The stories we report in the newspaper have spread the beautiful image of Uncle Ho's soldiers, the green-uniformed soldiers in the border areas of the province."

June 21 this year is a special, memorable and proud occasion for Vietnamese journalists, because it is the moment marking the important event of the 1 century anniversary of the birth of the Vietnamese revolutionary press. Assessing the role of press agencies in the past time, comrade Rah Lan Chung - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - emphasized: "Press agencies in Gia Lai have promoted their role well, propagating, orienting ideology, educating, persuading all classes of people to respond positively, participating in implementing the Party's guidelines and policies and the State's laws. We highly appreciate and acknowledge the dedication and active participation of the press in the province's revolutionary cause. The press has promoted its responsibility, gradually implementing the motto "using beauty to eliminate ugliness", using positivity to push back negativity; participating in accompanying the province on the path of struggle, construction and development".

The Vietnamese revolutionary press has entered its 100-year milestone. Along with being “concise” and “refined” in the spirit of Resolution No. 18-NQ/TW, the press also urgently needs to innovate and innovate continuously and more strongly; seek development solutions to be able to conquer readers and audiences on new platforms; and create a difference between the press and other media channels.

Regarding the development orientation in the coming time, journalist Huynh Kien - Editor-in-Chief of Gia Lai Newspaper, Chairman of the Provincial Journalists Association - informed: "We clearly define the responsibility of journalism as how to propagate so that people understand and accompany and agree with the Party's major policies. The cadres, civil servants and employees of Gia Lai Newspaper are ready to take on new tasks after changing administrative units. We also determined to develop the newspaper with 4 types of press (printed newspaper, electronic newspaper, radio newspaper, television newspaper), maintaining the Party's orientation in propaganda work and continuing to accompany the locality on the path of development".
