Kenh Lau sluice combined with the embankment in Hoa Tien commune, Vi Thanh city, is always effective in preventing salinity during the dry months every year.
Specifically, from 2020 to present, from local and socialized budget sources, Hau Giang has built 15 solid embankments to prevent riverbank erosion, with a total length of nearly 93.3km; at the same time, it has implemented 320km of ecological embankments. Regarding flood prevention, the province has invested in upgrading many closed production areas associated with irrigation works, intra-field canals, combining dykes with traffic to proactively irrigate people's agricultural production. In particular, the province has urgently relocated 1,500 households living along Cai Con and Cai Lon rivers at risk of landslides during the rainy season of 2021-2024.
Regarding the response to saline intrusion, during the dry months every year, the functional sectors of the province and localities affected by saline intrusion regularly inspect and effectively operate the dyke system and pumping stations to protect rice fields, fruit trees, aquatic products and vegetables for people; at the same time, install automatic salinity monitoring stations, close sluices when salinity exceeds 1.5‰; dredge canals, build temporary dams to store fresh water, increase backup water supply stations (groundwater) when salinity exceeds 0.75‰ in residential areas; popularize water-saving irrigation technology, aquaculture adapted to salinity... Thanks to the good implementation of the above solutions, since the beginning of the dry season in 2025 until now, although the salinity at many key points in Long My district often fluctuates from 3-5‰, there has been no record of damage in agricultural production and lack of domestic water for people.
