Celebrating the 84th Anniversary of the Traditional Day of the Vietnamese Elderly (June 6, 1941 - June 6, 2025): Joining hands to care for and promote the role of the elderly

Over the past years, all levels, sectors and localities in Khanh Hoa province have effectively implemented policies and mobilized resources to care for the elderly. Thereby, contributing to improving the quality of life, creating conditions for the elderly to live happily, healthily and joyfully, actively promoting the role of the elderly as good examples in many fields.

Ensure policies

Ms. Pham Thi Nong (83 years old, Ninh Loc commune, Ninh Hoa town) has no pension. When she turned 80, the local authorities made a record for her to receive social benefits at the rate of 500,000 VND/month. Ms. Nong shared: “At this age, I often suffer from pain and illness. Thanks to the monthly subsidy from the State, along with the policy of issuing free health insurance cards, it helps me reduce the burden of medical examination, treatment and medicine costs. When I am sick, members of the local association and elderly club often visit, support and encourage me, I am very happy”. Not far away, the local authorities also made a record for Ms. Tran Thi In and Mr. Trinh Van Be (81 years old, Ninh Loc commune, Ninh Hoa town) to receive a monthly subsidy of 500,000 VND/person/month, which helps them have more conditions to buy medicine to improve their health...

According to statistics from the Provincial Elderly Association, there are currently 132,855 elderly people in the province, of which more than 22,000 people without pensions are receiving monthly allowances of VND 500,000/person/month according to Decree No. 67, dated July 1, 2024 of the Government on amending and supplementing a number of articles of Decree No. 20, dated March 15, 2021 of the Government regulating social assistance policies for social protection beneficiaries. To ensure that the above subsidy policy reaches the right beneficiaries and does not miss any beneficiaries, every month, the Elderly Associations at all levels coordinate with local authorities to conduct a survey of eligible elderly people and conduct procedural records. Thanks to that, currently, most elderly people aged 80 and over without pensions are receiving monthly allowances. In addition, all levels, sectors and localities have also surveyed and issued free health insurance cards to eligible elderly people. To date, the whole province has more than 100,000 elderly people who have been issued free health insurance cards, creating conditions for them to be examined and given medicine to treat diseases, reducing the burden of monthly expenses. Along with that, medical facilities have proactively examined and established health records of more than 84,000 elderly people with diseases to promptly advise, intervene and treat them.

Every year, for the elderly who turn 90 and 100 years old, the locality prepares a dossier to proposethe President and the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee to send longevity gifts and congratulations. Particularly from the beginning of 2025 to now, the whole province has 154 elderly people who turn 100 years old and 1,136 elderly people who turn 90 years old receiving longevity gifts from the President and the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee with a total cost of more than 1.3 billion VND; Elderly Associations at all levels and local authorities give longevity gifts to 16,380 people who turn 70, 75, 80, 85, 95 years old with a total cost of more than 7.3 billion VND. In addition, every October, the whole province also strongly implements activities of the Action Month for the Elderly. In October 2024 alone, the whole province mobilized resources of more than 3.5 billion VND to visit, give gifts, and organize activities for more than 9,300 elderly people; Provided medical examinations for more than 53,000 elderly people; supported the construction and repair of more than 100 houses where elderly people live...

Promote the movement of physical exercise and sports for the elderly.

Effective implementation of activities

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh - President of the Provincial Elderly Association said that in order to encourage and motivate the elderly to actively promote their role, the associations at all levels have diversified useful and practical activities, attracting a large number of elderly people to participate. In particular, the propaganda and dissemination of the Party's policies and the State's laws have been enhanced in many diverse forms, creating high consensus and agreement among the elderly. In particular, hundreds of elderly people have contributed many practical opinions in participating in contributing ideas to amend the 2013 Constitution. The consultation of people on the arrangement of administrative units and the organization of 2-level local governments has also received consensus from the elderly and contributed many practical opinions. Along with that, the association has coordinated to effectively implement the program "Bright eyes for the elderly", through which annually examining eye diseases and providing consultation for about 1,000 elderly people. The emulation movement "Old age - bright example" has been widely deployed by the Association at all levels, attracting more than 90% of the elderly to participate. Through the movement, more than 7,000 elderly people have been mobilized to participate in the work of building the political system at the grassroots level. With their role, the elderly always take the lead and actively mobilize people to comply with the Party's policies and the State's laws. Typically, in the past time, the elderly have donated more than 10,000m2 of land to open roads and build public works.

In family economic development, thousands of elderly people actively participate and pass on their experiences and knowledge to their children and people. Through evaluation, from the beginning of 2024 to now, the whole province has 980 elderly people who are good at doing business at the commune level, 150 people who are good at doing business at the district level and 16 people who are good at doing business at the provincial level. In order for the activities of the elderly to become more vibrant and effective, the work of building and developing funds for caring for and promoting the role of the elderly and association funds has been widely carried out. To date, the whole province has 124 associations at the commune level that have established funds for caring for and promoting the role of the elderly with an amount of more than 7 billion VND; 922 village and residential group associations have established association funds with an amount of more than 22.5 billion VND. The Elderly Association at all levels has also established and maintained nearly 700 clubs of all kinds, including 104 intergenerational self-help clubs that operate very effectively, creating conditions for the elderly to have a place to live happily, healthily and usefully.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh said that in the coming time, the association will focus on perfecting the organization after rearranging and merging the provincial and local retirement clubs at 2 levels to avoid interruption of activities. At the same time, it will coordinate to ensure policies for the elderly; effectively implement the program "Bright eyes for the elderly" and the emulation movements "Old age - bright example"...
