Dedicated to disadvantaged children

Instead of pursuing a "hot" industry with opportunities for advancement and attractive income, many young people devote all their abilities and enthusiasm to disadvantaged students.

Before officially becoming a teacher, Luu Hoang Ha (living in Hanoi) worked tirelessly as a volunteer at schools teaching early intervention for special children while he was a student majoring ineducational psychology.

Difficulties do not discourage

Hoang Ha has 5 years of experience teaching baking to mentally disabled and autistic teenagers at the Sunflower class - SEED CENTER Center for Life Skills and Career Guidance. She used to worry that her hot-tempered personality was not suitable for the job, but over time, the job helped her improve herself.

Teaching children is hard work, teaching children with special needs is even harder. However, Chi Linh still devotes herself to the children she loves, to the job she loves.

Prioritizing training life skills for children, Ha closely monitors from individual activities to group work to assign tasks, avoiding bias. Teaching children to master small tasks also requires many steps, some can do this step but cannot do that step. 30% of children at the center do not have spoken language. Sometimes, students have difficult to understand behaviors, so it is necessary to carefully understand the reason, patiently observe and adjust the approach. The story of "teaching today, tomorrow everything is like new" is very familiar. Social pressure and worries about food and clothing make some families unable to spend enough time taking care of their children. Some parents feel sorry for their children and do everything for them, making it difficult for the children to improve their situation. However, Ha has never been discouraged or wanted to switch to lighter work.

Young teacher Hoang Ha is not only a dedicated instructor and guide but also a friend who is always full of love for her students.

She believes in and wants to encourage children to be independent when no one is around. She sympathizes and accepts instead of imposing expectations. The moments when students voluntarily clean up, ask about her health, or simply perfect small skills also make Ha emotional. "After completing the program, many students have made clear progress, riding motorbikes proficiently and supporting the center to deliver orders they made themselves. Some students were hired to work at pho restaurants, coffee shops or sewing factories" - Ha said. She hopes there will be more connections between facilities and models across the country to create a support network, helping special children have more opportunities to play, study and work.

Happy with child's progress

After 4 years of working as a preschool teacher, Pham Ngoc Chi Linh (27 years old, from Tay Ninh ) noticed that the situation of children with slow speech, limited brain development... appeared frequently. She tried to learn more about special education and changed direction.

Since September 2024, Linh has started working with autistic children at An Career Guidance Club - Second Home for VIP Children (a loving term for children with special educational needs).

Classes usually have 5-8 children, most of them over 10 years old, and they are tutored individually. It takes at least 2-3 months to form habits in children, and it can take 1-2 years. Here, children learn culture (math, listening and speaking), life skills (recognizing body parts, sex education, greetings, etc.), career orientation (drawing, cooking, knitting, etc.) and activities to develop language and creative thinking.

Anticipating difficulties, Linh proactively gathered knowledge from books and experts. Before understanding autistic children, Linh was concerned and curious about their inner world . She realized that no child is inferior, each child has a different way of expressing, perceiving and experiencing. On the other hand, not all parents understand the importance of accompanying their children in the early intervention process, so the role of teachers is even more decisive. Every month, the club organizes workshops connecting experts, schools and parents to exchange and support children better. Linh is happy that more and more people are interested in finding suitable environments for their children, helping autistic children to both learn and play to develop comprehensively.

She excitedly showed off that the "special chefs" had just "produced" more than 50 kg of salted kimchi. It was the result of the students' persistent efforts as well as the teachers' guidance in every step of the preparation process over the course of 3 months.

For Linh, happiness every day is preparing lesson plans and exploring new teaching methods. From children who have no language to babbling a few simple words like a 2 or 3 year old child is also a good sign. "I believe that making children's lives more valuable and beautiful will help change prejudices, open up more humane perspectives and behaviors from the community" - Linh confided.
