In particular, Tam Quan Fishing Port is oriented to become a smart port, a seafood logistics center, solving overload, ensuring safety and hygiene for exploitation and trade activities.
Tam Quan Port is overloaded and needs upgrading.
To effectively implement the strategy of sustainable development of the marine economy , Gia Lai decided to relocate more than 2,500 fishing boats anchored in the Quy Nhon and De Gi areas to Tam Quan Fishing Port. According to the project, the province will expand the port and anchorage area by 95 hectares towards the sea, and at the same time build a resettlement area of 30 hectares for affected households. Tam Quan Fishing Port is oriented to be built into a specialized, smart, modern regional fishing port that meets international standards.

Mr. Dang Van Dan, Acting Director of Tam Quan Fishing Port, said: Currently, the port infrastructure has degraded and is in dire need of investment and upgrading. The anchorage area is about 75 hectares wide, planned to accommodate 1,200 ships 15 meters or longer, but the actual number of ships entering and leaving is much higher. There are 2,114 local ships over 15 meters long, with about 1,900 regularly anchored; more than 200 ships from other provinces come for shelter. If we add ships from 6 to 15 meters, there are nearly 480 more.
Not only is the Tam Quan estuary overloaded, the silting situation is increasingly serious. Of the planned 75 hectares of anchorage area, only about 35 hectares are still operational; the rest is silted, making it difficult for ships to access. Many ships are damaged when entering and exiting the shallow channel, while the locality has not been allocated funds for regular dredging. This forces many ships to move to other ports, reducing revenue from logistics and trade services.
Faced with this situation, the Port Management Board has mobilized more than 1 billion VND from the public for urgent dredging, both to clear the temporary channel and prevent erosion of the southern embankment. Although the need for 2.2 billion VND in 2025 is to completely handle the situation, the first dredging step has helped large-tonnage purse seine vessels to enter and exit the port again. Since August 2025, more than 2,200 tons of aquatic products worth over 60 billion VND have been brought to the port, but some large vessels are still hesitant because the channel is not wide enough.
Towards smart ports and logistics
According to the province's orientation, by 2030, Tam Quan Fishing Port will be built into a smart, modern port, a seafood logistics center of the province, integrating an auction center and tuna trading floor, contributing to increasing production value, attracting businesses and expanding export markets.

The importance of the port is clearly shown through its output and services. Every month, about 1,000 ships over 15 m long leave port, each ship spends an average of 80 million VND on fuel, food, ice, etc., totaling about 80 billion VND. The value of aquatic products traded through the port every month is about 200 billion VND. The State's oil support for the local offshore fleet alone is about 500 billion VND/year. Therefore, investment in infrastructure, especially waterways and ancillary services, directly impacts the production and business of the entire region.
To meet development needs, the Port Management Board proposed local adjustments to the detailed planning at a scale of 1/500; investing in a wastewater treatment system, office building, weighing station, camera, loudspeaker, garbage storage... At the same time, it proposed deploying an AI fishing vessel identification system to monitor and combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing - an urgent requirement as the province promotes integration into the EU market.
Some items are still lacking and pose a safety risk, such as the fire protection system in area D that still uses salty river water; toilets for the fish market with a scale of 600 - 1,000 people operating every day... also need urgent investment to ensure environmental sanitation and urban beauty.
The situation of vessels under 15 m operating illegally, especially trawlers, still occurs, causing a decline in resources and affecting the ecosystem. The Port Management Board requested that the functional forces coordinate to handle it firmly. Regarding electronic fishing logs, captains currently have to use many different software, causing difficulties in operation. The Port recommends building unified, easy-to-use software and integrating voice to suit working conditions at sea.
Mr. Tran Quoc Khanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said that after reviewing the infrastructure of Tam Quan Fishing Port under the direction of the Provincial People's Committee, the Department has compiled investment needs including: 16.65 billion VND for purchasing and repairing equipment; 75 billion VND for investment in construction, renovation, upgrading, expansion and new construction of fishing port works and fishing logistics services. The total proposed budget for the 2026-2028 period is 91.65 billion VND, of which 31.25 billion VND is expected for 2026 alone.
