Hiep Loi Ward, Nga Bay City, has focused on expanding the area of seedless lemons in the area, hoping to contribute to increasing income and improving people's lives.

Seedless lemon has the second largest area in Hiep Loi ward, after rice.

If at the end of 2015, the whole ward only had about 32 hectares of land growing seedless lemons, then by the end of October 2023, the ward's seedless lemon area had reached about 140 hectares.

According to Mr. Do Trung Hau, technical officer of Hiep Loi Ward People's Committee: "Compared to other types of trees, seedless lemons have simpler care techniques. The advantage of the tree is its high tolerance to alum, can withstand flooding for 2-3 days, suitable for the terrain and soil of the ward".

Since the beginning of the year, the Economic Department of Nga Bay City has supported 50% of the value of seedless lemon seedlings for farmers in Hiep Loi Ward. From this model, 15,820 seedless lemon trees have been newly planted with a total area of 26.1 hectares.

Hiep Loi Ward also has 10 hectares of land growing seedless lemons participating in the model "Growing seedless lemons according to GlobalGAP standards associated with chain linkage to increase product value", implemented by the Provincial Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Services Center. During the year, the model supported nearly 24 tons of fertilizer of all kinds for participating farmers, and provided technical support to build a model of growing seedless lemons that meet GlobalGAP standards. Thereby, increasing the value of seedless lemon trees in the ward.

In 2019, Mr. Duong Hoang Chien, in Lang Sen A area, Hiep Loi ward, started growing seedless lemons on his family's land of about 1.5 hectares. Now, after more than 4 years, Mr. Chien feels that he was right to choose to grow this type of tree. "I can leave fruit after 18 months, and harvest after about 2 years. Thanks to the application of science and technology, I can process trees to bear fruit regularly throughout the year, bringing in a higher and more stable income," Mr. Chien shared.

Last April, Mr. Chien and a number of farmers in Lang Sen A area established the Chien Linh Agricultural Cooperative. As the Director of the Cooperative, he regularly gathers members to exchange experiences and share techniques for growing seedless lemons with high productivity and quality. In addition, he is also one of the households participating in the GlobalGAP standard seedless lemon growing model in the area.

According to local leaders, this tree has contributed to raising the average income per capita of the ward from 40 million VND/person/year (2015) to 65-70 million VND/person/year as at present.

Mr. Le Huu Thinh, Vice Chairman of Hiep Loi Ward People's Committee, said: "To sustainably develop seedless lemon trees in the ward, in the near future, we will continue to expand the lemon growing area by about 30 hectares in Xeo Vong B and Xeo Vong C areas to link with the lemon growing area in Lang Sen A area. Continue to apply science and technology, grow lemons according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards. Build a growing area code for lemon trees as well as strengthen chain linkages to increase the value of seedless lemons, contributing to the development of the province's key crop".
