In recent years, Nam Nhun district has implemented many effective economic models in communes of ethnic minorities. People have gradually changed...

In Nam Manh commune, home to the Mong and Kho Mu people, the model of linking commercial squash cultivation with product consumption has been effective. Since 2024, Nam Manh commune has coordinated with the District Agricultural Service Center to implement a squash growing model with an area of 5 hectares in Nam Manh village, with 12 households participating. Instead of planting on a small scale, each household has a plot, households are trained in techniques, agree on a crop schedule, share seeds and materials, and sign a product consumption contract with purchasing enterprises. Ms. La Thi Duyen (a resident of Nam Manh village) said: “Previously, I only grew rice and corn once a year, and my income was unstable. Since participating in the squash growing model, I have been supported with techniques, seeds, and products that have a place to sell, so I feel secure in production. Last year, my family earned nearly 40 million VND from selling squash, and our lives have improved significantly.”
Not only in Nam Manh, Trung Chai commune - where many Mang ethnic people live - is also recording the effectiveness of the indigenous pig farming linkage model. The model is implemented in the form of a group of households, guided by the Commune Farmers' Association in coordination with the Agricultural Service Center, the District Department of Agriculture and Environment, providing technical support and connecting with traders in Nam Nhun town and Lai Chau city. Having experience in raising livestock, people can easily access the model, while stable output helps them feel secure in re-herding and investing in expanding the scale.
In Muong Mo and Nam Cha communes, the model of linking planting and purchasing cinnamon products is highly appreciated by the people because it takes advantage of the land and is suitable for local farming practices. According to this method, cinnamon growers are committed to purchasing products from enterprises and cooperatives, bringing high economic efficiency. In addition, in Le Loi commune, the model of raising free-range chickens, growing pineapples, macadamia trees, etc., jointly implemented by the Farmers' Association and the Youth Union, has also had positive effects. Households are provided with breeds, vaccinations, and guidance on farming techniques, and businesses purchase on the spot. Thanks to this, the price of chickens and pineapples is stable, the output is sustainable, and people are not forced to lower prices as before.

People in Tang Nga village (Nam Cha commune) actively plant and care for cinnamon trees.

The success of economic linkage models in ethnic minority areas in Nam Nhun cannot be ignored due to the role of support policies from the central, provincial and district levels. In particular, the effective integration of national target programs (new rural construction, socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas...) has created favorable conditions for people to access new varieties of crops and livestock; receive support in infrastructure, machinery, technical training and market connections.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Hien - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Nam Nhun district said: "We clearly identify that the economic development of ethnic minority areas must be based on a foundation of sustainable linkages, linked to the market. Therefore, the district prioritizes the selection of models that are suitable for soil conditions, production practices, have the ability to replicate and connect many households. During the implementation process, the district focuses on the role of mass organizations and cooperatives as a bridge."
A notable point from the economic linkage models in Nam Nhun is the clear change in people's production thinking. If in the past, most people produced on a small scale, self-sufficiently, and did not care about product quality and design, now they know how to choose good varieties, follow technical processes, keep records, ensure food safety and produce according to market demand. Now many households are familiar with working in groups, sharing experiences, supporting each other in production and product consumption...
Despite many positive results, the development of the linkage economic model in the ethnic minority area in Nam Nhun still faces many challenges. Traffic infrastructure in many highland villages is still difficult, production scale is small and scattered; people's management and production organization skills are limited; lack of investment capital to expand production... In the coming time, the district will continue to review the potential and advantages of each commune and village to select suitable key products, encourage the establishment of cooperatives, cooperative groups and small enterprises in the locality to lead linkage models. At the same time, promote the application of science, technology, digital transformation in agriculture, gradually build brands of highland agricultural products, increase added value and income for people.
Sharing about this, Mr. Nguyen Van Giap - Vice Chairman of Nam Nhun District People's Committee emphasized: "Determining economic linkage is the key to promoting sustainable agricultural development, contributing to rapid poverty reduction and improving the quality of life for ethnic minorities. The district will continue to direct specialized departments, communes and towns to accompany and support people from production organization to consumption, creating the most favorable conditions for linkage models to develop more and more strongly and effectively".
The above positive results are the foundation for Nam Nhun to continue to expand linkage models, form typical commodity production areas, gradually improve the quality of life, and contribute to narrowing the development gap between regions and ethnic groups in the area.
