“Thailand and Indonesia have always been two formidable opponents in the region. In my observation, Thailand has a very technical playing style and a very solid organizational system, while Indonesia stands out with its strong physical foundation and high speed. Confrontations with these two teams are often very tense and require careful preparation in both tactics and mentality,” coach Kim Sang-sik shared on the AFF homepage ahead of the U23 Southeast Asian tournament.

Thailand and Indonesia are the two strongest opponents competing for the championship with U23 Vietnam at the U23 Southeast Asian Championship. In this tournament, young Vietnamese players are the defending champions. According to coach Kim Sang-sik, being crowned the champion twice in a row is something to be very proud of. However, the Korean strategist does not want the players to feel pressured by expectations. Instead, he wants them to focus on showing their best in each match.

“I encourage the players to see this tournament as an opportunity to develop and grow, rather than just focusing on the result. When you focus on the process, the results will come naturally,” he continued.

The U23 Southeast Asian Championship is a stepping stone for Vietnam U23 to move towards the U23 Asian Qualifiers or SEA Games. Therefore, the Korean coach affirmed that this will be an opportunity for him to evaluate each player as well as test the squad to prepare for the next tournaments.

“This tournament will help us evaluate individual abilities, as well as test different combinations to improve tactical cohesion. For young players, this is a valuable environment to accumulate international competition experience,” coach Kim Sang-sik continued.

Finally, he believes that Thai Son and Ly Duc will be the factors that help U23 Vietnam have a successful tournament. “I have had the opportunity to work with Thai Son and Ly Duc before. Both are players with potential and good fighting spirit. I believe they will contribute positively to the team and demonstrate their abilities in the upcoming tournament,” said Coach Kim.

The U23 Southeast Asian Championship will take place from July 15 to 31 in Indonesia. The draw of luck has placed U23 Vietnam in Group B with Laos and Cambodia. To prepare for the goal of defending the championship, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will gather from June 26 to July 13 in Vung Tau. This gathering, U23 Vietnam will also welcome the return of striker Nguyen Dinh Bac.
