"My teammates and I are all sad that Cong Phuong cannot continue to accompany the team in the upcoming period. It has been a long time since Phuong returned to the team. He, like the other members, are very important to the team," Hoang Duc said in an interview at the afternoon training session of the Vietnam team on June 3.
Hoang Duc continued: "We all welcome Mr. Phuong, but unfortunately he suffered an unfortunate injury. This is a big loss in the preparation for the upcoming important match.
The players encouraged and wished Mr. Phuong a quick recovery so that he can return to the team soon. For every player, being injured when joining the team is truly a sad thing."
Coach Kim Sang Sik called up Cong Phuong to the Vietnam national team during FIFA Days in June to prepare for the match against Malaysia in the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup. Phuong's return after more than a year of absence from the national team has received much attention.
However, his physical condition did not allow him to practice for only 2 sessions. This player suffered a foot pain after the first session on May 30, missed 2 sessions on May 31 and June 1, before enduring the pain to practice for the last session on June 2 and then said goodbye.
Without Cong Phuong's service, coach Kim Sang Sik called up young striker Nguyen Quoc Viet to replace him.
This is the latest injury of the team after cases like Nguyen Van Toan, Bui Hoang Viet Anh, Vu Van Thanh or Nguyen Thanh Binh.
In contrast to the Vietnamese team's personnel loss, Malaysia is being highly appreciated for its squad upgrades.
"Malaysia has many naturalized players and new players. When watching Malaysia's video, we realized that their squad has many unfamiliar faces. It's been a long time since Vietnam faced Malaysia, we are determined to play well. That will be our most important match this year," Hoang Duc expressed his determination.
Sharing about the integration of new recruit Cao Pendant Quang Vinh, Hoang Duc said: "We welcomed and enthusiastically supported Vinh when he first joined the team. Yesterday was the first day the Vietnamese team practiced tactics when they had enough players. Like previous tactical training sessions, the coaching staff encouraged the players to exchange information and bond more."
On June 6, the Vietnamese team will leave for Malaysia to prepare for the match with the host on June 10.
