Thang Long Imperial Citadel is considered one of the models of relic conservation in Vietnam, harmonizing the relationship between conservation and promotion of relic values.
Exactly 10 years ago, the World Heritage Committee recognized the Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long as the 900th World Heritage. Many valuable experiences in preserving and promoting the value of this heritage have been accumulated over the years. By 2019, about 50,000 m2 of the Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel had been excavated, revealing a dense and astonishing system of relics and artifacts from the 7th to the 19th centuries, proving a center of supreme power of the country throughout more than 1,000 years of history.
Thang Long Imperial Citadel is the only heritage site in the country that has a Scientific Advisory Council whose members are all research experts of the National Heritage Council, giving opinions on all decisions related to the heritage. Thanks to that, Thang Long Imperial Citadel is considered the most prominent highlight among the world heritage sites recognized by UNESCO in Vietnam. "The historical value of the Imperial Citadel itself is very special compared to other relics such as the Ho Dynasty Citadel or the Hue Imperial Citadel and it must be said that the Imperial Citadel has balanced between preserving and promoting the value of the relic" - Mr. Emmanuel Cerise, representative of the Paris region (France) in Vietnam said. However, there are still concerns. The restoration of the Kinh Thien Palace, considered the most important "wind-gathering" acupuncture point in the central area of the relic, was proposed by the Hanoi People's Committee many years ago but has not been implemented for many reasons. In recent years, the promotion of technology application has significantly increased the attractiveness of the Imperial Citadel. In 2019, there were more than 500,000 visitors, including more than 100,000 students visiting and studying. Thang Long Imperial Citadel is increasingly affirming its position as a safe, beautiful destination with a strong cultural and historical imprint of the Capital.
