Studying is still the top priority of students - Photo: MT
Parents were all silent when they heard this news. Everyone was so surprised about their children's academic results. They did not expect the consequences of working part-time to be so serious. In fact, some students have to work up to 22 hours a day, some even work through the weekends with the reason "wanting to help their parents" or "wanting to have pocket money and be independent".
However, this “independence” is being traded off for both physical and mental decline. Declining academic performance is the most obvious consequence. Working late at night, staying up late and waking up early makes students tired, sleep deprived, and unable to concentrate when studying. Lack of time to do homework and review lessons leads to low scores and even loss of motivation to study. Working in a stressful environment often causes students to fall into a state of stress and exhaustion. Not getting enough sleep and eating irregularly can easily lead to physical weakness and developmental disorders.
School age is supposed to be a time for self -discovery , learning, healthy entertainment and practicing life skills. Working part-time early makes students gradually lose their innocence and youthful joy, instead they are pressured to make a living and suffer from prolonged fatigue. Some students work in uncontrolled environments, are easily lured, exploited or even drawn into social evils. There are cases where students, because of being too busy making money, gradually neglect their studies, drop out of school and fall into the wrong path.
However, many of them are students whose family circumstances are too difficult and are at risk of having to drop out of school if they are not independent. An 11th grade student named T. confided: “My family is poor, my parents are freelancers, with unstable income. Since the summer of 10th grade, I started working part-time at a milk tea shop to help my parents with tuition and personal expenses.
At first, I only worked on weekends, but later on, I worked on weekday evenings, from 6pm to 10pm. Many days, I got home from work at 11pm, ate a quick bowl of cold rice, and fell asleep. The next morning, when I went to class, my mind was still in a daze, I couldn't understand what the teacher was saying, and my test scores were always below average. Many people didn't understand, saying that we were greedy for money and lazy to study.
But actually, I also want to study well, go to university, and have a stable job. It's just that my family's circumstances are too heavy. There were times when I thought about dropping out of school to go to work, to ease the burden on my parents, but I felt sorry."
Ms. Tr. H., a 10th grade homeroom teacher, said: “Many students come to class with dark circles under their eyes and yawn constantly. Some students are not alert enough to take the test, let alone absorb new knowledge. I am very worried that this situation is no longer an isolated incident but has become common in the class.”
In fact, students working part-time is not new, but the current level and frequency makes many people think. Jobs such as serving in restaurants, selling goods, delivering goods... although providing students with income, often last until late at night, requiring energy and time, while students are still at the age where they need to rest, develop physically, mentally and absorb knowledge comprehensively.
According to Mr. NVH, principal of a school in Dong Ha city, students working part-time is acceptable if it is well managed and limited within a reasonable framework. “Parents and schools need to coordinate to guide students about the value of labor, but at the same time, they must also emphasize the importance of studying and maintaining health. Part-time work should only take place during the summer vacation or at a light frequency, without affecting regular study.”
The question is: Who will guide them? Many students are not closely monitored by their parents, some parents even encourage their children to work early to “take care of themselves”.
Meanwhile, schools do not have a specific mechanism to control or support students who have to both study and work. High school students are at the age of forming their personalities and preparing for adulthood. If they are not properly oriented, they can lose their future just because of temporary choices.
Although the purpose of part-time work is to help students gain experience or reduce the burden on their families, at their age, studying should still be the top priority. Schools, parents and society need to work together to create a healthy learning environment where students can study, rest and develop at their age before it is too late.
