The first English debate tournament under Public Forum rules in the North - Vietnam International Public Forum Championship (VIPFC) 2024 took place on the evening of November 9 at Olympia School (Hanoi), with the participation of more than 160 contestants from 35 high schools across the country and a large audience.
More than 80 teams from the 2 junior high school (Silvanus) and high school (Poseidon) groups entered the preliminary round (quarterfinals and semi-finals) to select the 6 best teams from the junior high school group and 2 teams from the high school group to enter the final.
With the theme throughout the rounds “Single-use plastic bags should be banned”, the contestants focused on analyzing different aspects of this global environmental issue.

After intense and dramatic confrontations, the final round of the high school group named the HL team (including Mai Phong Hai - grade 9 student and Le Phong Linh - grade 8 student of Nguyen Truong To Secondary School, Hanoi) and the Les critiques team (including Le Linh Chi and Nguyen An Khanh, both grade 10 students of Olympia High School, Hanoi).
In the secondary school group, there are a total of 6 teams in the finals. These are the teams with the highest scores from the semi-finals and quarter-finals. The teams are divided into 3 pairs to compete for the Gold - Silver - Bronze prizes.
In which, the Gold pair are the 2 teams with the highest scores out of 6 teams, including THS Let Us Cook (including Nguyen Hai Phong and Nguyen Ngoc Minh Khang, both 7th graders at TH School, Hanoi) and The cooked (including Do Minh Ngoc, 8th grader at Nguyen Trai Secondary School, Hanoi and Nguyen Huu Anh Khoa, 8th grader at The Dewey schools, Hanoi).
In the end, team HL and team The cooked won the championship.
Team HL won the championship.
Expressing his happiness at winning the highest prize of the contest, Mai Phong Hai (9th grade student of Nguyen Truong To Secondary School, Hanoi) said that to confidently enter the contest, he and his companion had compiled knowledge and practiced nearly a month in advance.
"The competition provided us with a lot of knowledge, helping us understand more deeply the pressing issue in society, which is the use of disposable plastic bags. With the Public Forum rule, we were only allowed to debate one topic throughout the rounds, requiring an extremely large amount of information," Phong Hai said.
According to Hai Phong, not only do they need to be well-founded with convincing evidence to defend their point of view, in each round, teams must adjust their tactics, absorb new perspectives from their opponents to supplement their understanding of the topic, thereby best preparing for the final debate to compete for First, Second and Third prizes.
Coming to the competition with confidence and playing with all his might, valuable knowledge and experience are what Nguyen An Khanh (10th grade student at Olympia High School, Hanoi) received after finishing the competition.
"Knowledge about the environment, presentation skills, speaking skills, thinking skills and critical thinking in a short time are the things we learned from the competition. I hope this competition will be maintained and organized annually, becoming a useful knowledge playground, helping us students become more and more confident," An Khanh expressed.

VIPFC is the first competition in the North to apply the Public Forum rule. Instead of having to research a wide range of topics, the Public Forum rule requires teams to debate on a topic throughout the tournament, usually revolving around economic, political, and social issues.
More than just a debate competition, VIPFC is a place for students to raise their voices and share their ideas with the community, thereby raising awareness and joining hands to promote initiatives for a more sustainable and better world.
