Let AI decide even about breaking up with their lover, students live like machines

(Dan Tri) - Asking for advice from artificial intelligence (AI) and letting AI decide the problem is the situation of many students today. They spend a lot of time communicating with these tools instead of going out to make friends.

When students “live with” AI

Just send a command line, a few seconds later, the complete essay is "baked". That is the method that Lan Anh, a 4th year student at a university in Ho Chi Minh City, often applies whenever she needs to complete her homework.

For Lan Anh, relying on AI to help with work has become a habit and extremely convenient.

“AI helps me solve problems quickly and easily, saving a lot of time and effort,” the student shared.

She said that 30-40 page essays with urgent deadlines are really challenging if done the traditional way. But with AI support, she almost has a complete paper, the rest is just polishing the words to make them smoother.

Not only in studying, Lan Anh also relies on AI to support many other issues in life. For example, when she needs to contact her lecturer or boss, the 4th-year student often lets AI compose messages to ensure that she behaves politely, tactfully, and avoids causing offense.

Like Lan Anh, many students today consider AI tools as their “right hand” in all aspects of life. From studying to personal life, young people can easily type a few lines of questions and receive a series of detailed, seemingly reasonable and even understanding advice.

Students say that asking questions to AI helps them gain a more objective view and make better decisions. However, when the dependence becomes too much, AI is no longer a support tool but completely takes over the decision making on their behalf.

“Once my boyfriend and I had an argument, but we both had our own reasons. Because we couldn’t tell right from wrong, I asked AI to analyze it better,” said Ngoc Thanh, a third-year student majoring in communications in Ho Chi Minh City.

Not only a learning support tool, AI has also become a “soul mate” for many students. Instead of going out to meet and make friends like before, young people choose to stay at home, chatting with “virtual characters” played by AI.

“I am an introvert so it is difficult for me to start a conversation in real life. That is why I often talk to AI like a friend, share everything and that makes me feel more comfortable,” Khanh Quan, a student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, confided.

Although students have a habit of consulting AI because they believe that these tools provide more perspectives than simply thinking on their own, they do not deny that overusing them can make them dependent and easily misunderstand.

Moreover, AI answers can limit students' ability to think, analyze and perceive problems. When chatting with AI, loneliness is temporarily filled, but it can also easily make young people become dependent, withdrawn and less proactive in seeking sharing from real people.

Be mindful when using AI

Having let AI decide almost everything in life, from what to eat, what to study to how to react in relationships, Ngo Vy, a fourth-year student in Ho Chi Minh City, admitted that there was a time when she relied too much on this tool.

However, after realizing that she was gradually losing the ability to think and choose for herself, Vy began to be more proactive in making decisions and only saw AI as a reference tool.

“With experience, I am more aware when using AI, avoiding relying too much on it. Whenever I ask a question, I always verify it myself and compare it with many other sources of information,” the student said.

Thanks to that, female students not only take advantage of AI as a rich source of documents, but also learn how to evaluate information and analyze problems multi-dimensionally.

“AI helps me save time reading documents and making rough outlines, but I am still the one who takes the initiative,” said the fourth-year student.

With AI growing, experts have warned against the misuse of these tools. They say students need to see AI as a means of support in life and work, not letting it replace them.

In a speech titled “Can AI companions help heal loneliness?”, Eugenia Kuyda, founder of Replika (an AI application designed to converse and accompany people), affirmed the risks of not using AI properly.

“If we let AI take up all our time and attention, we will gradually lose the ability to truly connect with each other,” she warned.

In fact, when used properly, AI can help students practice self-study skills, write essays, give presentations or analyze data quite well. Universities are also gradually incorporating AI skills into their curriculum, helping students understand the limits and responsibilities when using this technology.

In the context of artificial intelligence penetrating every corner of life, using AI intelligently is also one of the very important skills that students need to practice. AI can give you the right advice, but only you know what is really suitable for you.
