"Hot" extracurricular subjects in Vietnam
Present in Vietnam since 2015, after 10 years, debate has become the hottest extracurricular subject in secondary and high schools in recent years. The WSC Regional Round of the competition, held in Hanoi in May 2025, attracted more than 2,000 participants, approximately 1.3 times more than the previous year's competition.
The main competition categories of WSC include essay writing, debate, and general knowledge tests. Specifically, WSC has four sections divided into two halves: the skills half (including Collaborative Writing and Debate) and the knowledge half (including the Challenge and Scholar's Bowl sections: general knowledge tests on various topics: music, history, art, technology, geography, and socio -political issues ).

Top 3 Team Bowl players: Nguyen Vu Huu Duc, Hoang Van Minh Duc, and Ngo Doanh Chau carried the national flag with them as part of their journey abroad.
According to coach Ngo To Duy, platforms like WSC, debates, and essay writing help students hone their critical thinking, listening skills, and gradually develop independent thinking. "With confidence and a solid foundation of knowledge, students are then capable of critical thinking and facing challenges," Mr. Duy said.
To participate in the WSC, candidates must study a 2,000-page English syllabus covering a wide range of in-depth topics: science , technology, classical literature, famous symphonies, renowned scholars, and socio-political issues.
Students who want to win awards not only need to memorize but also deeply understand the knowledge to analyze and predict situations. The process of accumulating a large amount of knowledge requires perseverance and the right learning methods to unlock their potential.
The WSC competition kicks off with regional rounds in 60 countries. The top-ranked winners in each regional round receive invitations to participate in the global (international) round in various locations around the world (Bangkok, London, Dubai, Seoul, etc.).
The contestant with the highest score in the Global round will meet again at Yale University (USA) in the "Champions Season" to compete in the final round.
