National scientific conference discusses interdisciplinary solutions to prevent and combat child marriage and consanguineous marriage in ethnic minority areas

On the morning of May 20, at the Vietnam Women's Academy Branch (Thu Duc City), a national scientific conference with the theme "Interdisciplinary approach in preventing and combating child marriage and consanguineous marriage in ethnic minority areas - For the future of children" was held, attracting a large number of experts, scientists, lecturers, Women's Union officials and delegates from provinces and cities to attend.

The workshop, chaired by the Vietnam Women's Academy Branch, in coordination with the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union, is an important professional activity within the framework of implementing the National Target Program on Socio -Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, PhD student, Master Nguyen Thi Thu Huong - Director of the Vietnam Women's Academy Branch emphasized: "The situation of early marriage and consanguineous marriage is not only a legal issue, but also a major challenge to sustainable development, population quality and the future of children in ethnic minority areas. A multidimensional, interdisciplinary and humane approach is needed to solve the problem at its root."

The conference program lasted all day, with three main discussion sessions. The morning session focused on theoretical issues and new approaches. The presentations were made by a team of experts such as: Dr. Duong Duc Minh (Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Economic and Tourism Development Research) with the topic "Cultural discourse and reflective journey: Anthropological approach to child marriage in the Khmer community in Tra Vinh"; Dr. Pham Thanh Thoi (Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities) presented the reality of child marriage in the Central Highlands through the lens of anthropology...

At the workshop, the Women's Unions of Tay Ninh, Dak Lak, Gia Lai provinces... introduced effective methods in their localities. Ms. Kim Thi Minh - Vice President of the Women's Union of Tay Ninh province emphasized the inter-sectoral coordination between the Women's Union and other sectors to propagate and mobilize ethnic minorities to raise awareness, gradually eliminating child marriage.

The workshop also emphasized the role of young people, influential people in the community and communication models to change behavior. Local delegates agreed that to thoroughly resolve the situation of early marriage and consanguineous marriage, it is necessary to combine legal intervention, education, communication and capacity building for grassroots union officials.
