Workshop "Potential for development of Black Melaleuca trees in Lai Chau province"

Attending were representatives of leaders of the Departments of Agriculture and Environment, Industry and Trade; Forestry Department,
Cooperative Alliance, Provincial Science and Technology Association, leaders of the People's Committees of Muong Khoa, Ban Bo, Binh Lu communes, representatives of specialized departments of communes and scientists from the Center for Research on Non-Timber Forest Products. MSc. Bui Thi Le Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, chaired the workshop.

Speaking at the workshop, Master Bui Thi Le Dung: Black Melaleuca is a precious native tree species, with high economic and ecological value. In Lai Chau province, Black Melaleuca trees are found concentrated in districts such as Tan Uyen, Than Uyen, Nam Nhun, Phong Tho... with a total of over 2,000 trees, many of which are over 30 years old. Black Melaleuca fruit products are popular in domestic and foreign markets, with stable prices of about 80,000 - 100,000 VND/kg. During the implementation of the project, through investigation and evaluation, the project selected 20 outstanding trees recognized by the competent authorities in Decision No. 60/QD-CCKL, dated October 2, 2023 and Decision No. 56/QD-CCKL dated September 20, 2023 of the Forest Protection Department (In Nam Hang commune, 08 outstanding trees, In Tan Uyen commune, 12 outstanding trees were selected). The fruit yield of the outstanding trees reached from 35-112kg/tree. The content of 21 types of substances and minerals in black canarium fruits collected in Lai Chau such as iron, zinc, calcium, protein, fat, sugar, citric acid, tannin, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K... all reached exceptionally high levels. At the same time, the project also developed technical guidelines for propagation and planting black canarium trees for seeds in Lai Chau to clarify the potential, significance, and development of black canarium trees in the province.

After the working time, the workshop exchanged and discussed to clarify the potential, significance and development of Black Star fruit trees in Lai Chau province. From there, it determined and oriented the development of Black Star fruit trees in Lai Chau province to make Black Star fruit trees become a high-value economic crop of Lai Chau province.
