The opening ceremony of the 18th Pyongyang International Film Festival took place at the Pyongyang International Cinema Center on October 22.
After the ceremony, the art film "Red Silk" co-produced by Russia and China was screened.
Also at the opening ceremony, the head of the North Korean National Film Administration stressed that this event will be an opportunity to further strengthen friendship between progressive countries and filmmakers around the world.
The Pyongyang International Film Festival was established in 1987 and is the only international film festival in North Korea. Before becoming an annual event in 2018, the Pyongyang International Film Festival was held every two to three years.
However, after the 2019 edition, the Pyongyang International Film Festival was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
North Korea has been trying to revive its tourism industry by resuming international events that were “frozen” by the pandemic. In April, North Korea held the Pyongyang International Marathon for the first time in six years and opened a large-scale beach resort in the eastern coastal region of Kalma to foreign tourists last July.
