Hue recreates the Ban Soc Ceremony of the Nguyen Dynasty

HeritageHeritage02/01/2024

Ban Soc is an ancient calendar distribution ceremony of the Nguyen Dynasty, held periodically at the end of the lunar year. The ancient Vietnamese people considered agriculture as the most important economic activity , so the calendar had a special meaning to human life. Look at the calendar to keep track of time and weather to do farming. Look at the calendar to know the changes in weather to respond and prevent natural disasters.
Every year, after the Imperial Astronomical Bureau finished compiling the calendar, the imperial court held the Ban Soc ceremony under the direction of two officials from the Ministry of Rites and the Imperial Astronomical Bureau.
The calendar was brought into the Royal Palace for the Royal family to use; the calendar was distributed to officials in the Capital, in the localities and redistributed to the people for use.
The Ban Soc ceremony was originally held in the Thai Hoa Palace courtyard. In the year of Tan Suu 1841, for the first time, the Ban Soc ceremony was ordered by Emperor Minh Mang to be held at Ngo Mon Gate.
This year, the Nguyen Dynasty Ban Soc Ceremony was recreated in a theatrical form this morning, January 1, 2024 at Ngo Mon Square, as the kick-off program for the Hue Festival 2024, which aims to organize a four-season festival.
Reenacting the Ban Soc ceremony is a re-enactment of the humanistic spirit of the ancients and an opportunity for tourists and Hue people to experience the heritage of the ancient capital of Hue on the first day of the new year with many hopes coming soon.
