According to statistics of Ke Sach district, from 2020 to now, the district has experienced major natural disasters such as storms, high tides, droughts, saltwater intrusion, riverbank and dike landslides. Specifically, storms have damaged roofs and about 230 houses, the area of fruit gardens and rice fields damaged by storms is about 3,000 hectares; riverbank, embankment and road landslides are 361 sections, with a length of over 10,117m; 130 dikes have been eroded, with a length of 5,603m and saltwater intrusion is becoming more and more severe, going deeper into the fields, and saltwater intrusion lasts for 5-6 months in the dry season. Through monitoring, the time of highest salinity was in 2019 - 2020, the highest salinity measured at Nhon My estuary, Nhon My commune was up to 11.4‰, in Ke Sach town, the highest salinity measured was up to 10.2‰, greatly affecting the area of fruit gardens of farmers, especially for crops with high economic value such as durian, rambutan...

Due to the impact of drought and saltwater intrusion, in the past 5 years, the estimated area of damage to rice and fruit trees caused by saltwater intrusion is 2,447 hectares. In addition to saltwater intrusion, some localities in the district are also affected by high tides, affecting fruit orchards and people's travel. To overcome the damage caused by natural disasters and stabilize production for people, the district has mobilized forces with the motto "4 on-site" to support people to repair 186 houses, with a total amount of more than 2.1 billion VND, and support more than 87 million VND to repair fruit orchards affected by natural disasters. Particularly for riverbanks and dykes that have been eroded, the district has received a lot of investment from the Central and the province to overcome them, by building anti-erosion embankments on Rach Vop River, Thoi An Hoi Commune, Trinh Phu Commune, Ke Sach Town, etc., along with hundreds of anti-erosion works in riverside localities in the district. In addition to support from the capital for landslide prevention and disaster relief from higher levels, the district also focuses all resources on overcoming all types of natural disasters occurring in the district.
Every year, Ke Sach district develops plans to prevent, combat and overcome the consequences of natural disasters, along with establishing a steering committee for natural disaster prevention and combat from the district to the commune level and establishing teams and groups for natural disaster prevention and combat to promptly respond to natural disaster situations and promptly inform people about natural disasters to proactively respond.
Comrade Cao Minh Thom - Vice Chairman of Ke Sach District People's Committee shared that the district will further strengthen response work as well as continue to effectively implement Directive No. 42-CT/TW, dated March 24, 2020 of the Central Party Secretariat on strengthening the Party's leadership in the work of preventing, responding to, and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters; plans of the Provincial Party Standing Committee on implementing Directive No. 42-CT/TW of the Secretariat; plans of the Provincial People's Committee on strengthening the work of preventing, responding to, and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters in Soc Trang province. Effectively implement the motto "4 on-site" and the principle of prevention, proactive timely response, and overcoming the consequences; promote the combined strength in the work of preventing, fighting natural disasters and search and rescue at all levels.
“Strengthen the dissemination and propaganda of laws on natural disaster prevention and control and integrate them into programs and propaganda content in meetings at the unit. Strengthen information, propaganda, warnings, and raise awareness for cadres, civil servants, public employees, and people about experiences in proactively preventing and responding to situations and incidents when natural disasters occur, minimizing risks and damage when natural disasters occur. Coordinate with units to organize training courses for cadres working on natural disaster prevention and control. Proactively arrange human resources, materials, means, equipment, necessities, and plans on natural disaster prevention and control to deploy response plans…”, added comrade Cao Minh Thom.
