“ It is with great sadness that we inform you that our father, Denis Law, has passed away. He fought a difficult battle but is now at peace,” Manchester United said in a statement on behalf of the family.
Denis Law has been suffering from dementia since August 2021 and has been cared for by his family all this time. The Red Devils' homepage continued: " We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to his health care. We know how much support and love everyone has shown him and that love is always appreciated. Thank you ."
Denis Law died at the age of 84.
Denis Law was born in Scotland in 1940 to a family of modest means. A prolific striker, Denis Law scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for Manchester United. He was signed for a British record transfer fee in 1962. Denis Law is the only player to have two statues dedicated to him at Old Trafford. Manchester United consider Law to be one of the greatest players of all time to play at Old Trafford.
Denis Law joined Man Utd in July 1962 and made his debut a month later. He immediately scored against West Brom and left his mark. Playing for Man Utd was the best time of Denis Law's career. He moved to Man City in 1973 and this was a controversial decision.
That season, he scored the winning goal in the final game against Manchester United, which resulted in the team being relegated. This historic backheel was later considered one of the most memorable moments in football. Denis Law described it as the most difficult time he had ever experienced.
Wayne Rooney - the club's all-time leading goalscorer - described Law as a "legend".
