Recently, Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman confirmed that Apple will launch a foldable iPhone in 2026.

Previously, many sources said that Apple was researching this device. According to Gurman, the design of the foldable iPhone will be similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, instead of the clamshell folding style.

Gurman said that the foldable iPhone will use many technologies from the iPhone 17 Air, Apple's upcoming super-thin iPhone. This will be one of Apple's thinnest devices ever and will likely be the thinnest - just 5.5mm.

However, in exchange for the "super thin" design, the iPhone 17 Air has some cutbacks, such as speakers and cameras. But other than that, the 17 Air still offers the full iPhone experience. Even the battery life will be quite impressive.

In fact, the phone serves as a testbed for how components can be arranged in an ultra-thin device — something that will be crucial for developing a foldable iPhone.

"Special" hinges

Previously, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple plans to use liquid metal in the hinge of the foldable iPhone to improve durability and reduce creases on the screen.

Apple is said to have chosen liquid metal, a material produced through a die-casting process, as a key component to address common issues with foldable devices. This design allows the display to be flatter and minimizes the creases that are common at the folding position.

Kuo noted that Apple has previously used liquid metal in small components like SIM ejectors, but this is the first time the company has applied the material to a major mechanical part. Dongguan EonTec will be the exclusive supplier of liquid metal to Apple.

Previous reports have said the foldable iPhone will have a 7.8-inch main display when unfolded and a 5.5-inch outer display.

According to Mr. Kuo, the foldable iPhone could come with two rear cameras, one front camera, and integrated Touch ID into the power button. When opened, the device will be only 4.5mm thick, and when folded, it will be about 9 - 9.5mm thick.

There are not many details about this product at the moment, but Gurman believes that the price will be around $2,000. In addition, the production process may encounter many difficulties, causing limited supply in the initial launch phase.

If everything goes according to plan, mass production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, meaning the foldable iPhone could launch in late 2026 or early 2027.
