In Binh Trung commune (Cho Don district), many large areas of timber forests bring high economic value.

Currently, the total area of existing planted forests in the province is over 102,222 hectares, of which about 83,900 hectares of planted forests have become forests (with timber reserves), mainly trees such as acacia, fat, cinnamon, pine... Each year, about 3,500 hectares of production forests reach the age of exploitation; the output of exploited timber reaches 370,000m3/year.

However, the forest economy has not really grown as expected, requiring management agencies to provide comments and strategic advice to increase the value of forestry production on the same area, choose crops, change crops, intercrop or change the cycle of planting and caring for forests.

Right in Bac Kan city, people in Xuat Hoa ward have also changed the type of trees grown on forestry land to increase economic value. Mr. Phung Kim Binh, head of group 2 of Xuat Hoa ward, shared: The group has 88 households, all of which have switched to growing cinnamon trees with about 300 hectares. Cinnamon trees were planted in the 1990s. After seeing the high economic efficiency, relatives began to switch from growing fat to growing cinnamon. Cinnamon trees about 7 years old begin to produce a crop and are thinned out. The current price of cinnamon bark is about 20,000 VND/kg. Cinnamon trees are sold from leaves, bark, branches; the trunk after peeling the bark is sold as firewood. The current value of cinnamon trees is much higher than other forestry trees.

People in Group 2, Xuat Hoa Ward choose to grow cinnamon trees because of their high economic value.

Mr. Nguyen My Hai, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment analyzed: For 01 ha of pure acacia forest 6 - 8 years old, the average output after exploitation is 91.54m3/ha, the profit after deducting expenses is 69.13 million VND. For 01 ha of pure fat forest 12 - 15 years old, the average output after exploitation is 123.83m3/ha, the profit after deducting expenses is 123.66 million VND...

For cinnamon trees planted for 10 years, after deducting all estimated costs, 1 hectare gives an average income of about 395.69 million VND; after 15 years of planting, after deducting all estimated costs, 1 hectare gives an average income of about 644.08 million VND;...

In the same care period of 13-15 years, if planting tallow, acacia and eucalyptus trees, people will only achieve a maximum income of 125 million VND, but if planting cinnamon, it can reach 600 million VND. Thus, planting cinnamon brings a value 4 times higher than other forestry trees with the same care. However, when choosing a tree to plant, it is also necessary to pay attention to the soil, climate and many other factors to bring high economic value.

In order to gradually increase the economic value of forests on the same area and the same forestry planting cycle, the Department of Agriculture and Environment issued a document guiding the implementation of the 2025 Spring crop production plan and completing the agricultural and forestry production target in 2025. In which, it propagates and guides people to convert ineffective crop structures to prioritize planting large timber trees, native trees, and multi-purpose trees with high economic value to create concentrated raw material areas for sustainable forest management and forest certification, improving the quality of planted forests. Priority is given to planting cinnamon trees in places with suitable site conditions. Cinnamon trees are assessed by the industry as having the highest economic efficiency.

In recent years, production forestation has created many jobs for rural workers, generated income and livelihoods for people, and attracted many domestic and foreign investors. With favorable conditions as present, large timber forests bring high economic value to people. People need to choose tree species suitable for the soil to plant forests in the direction of specialized cultivation, large timber forests to have sustainable income./.
