At least 58 people were killed and injured in an explosion at a gas station in Russia.

According to TASS news agency, at least 12 people were killed and 56 injured in a gas station explosion that occurred on the evening of August 14 in the city of Makhachkala, Republic of Dagestan, southern Russia.

Among the victims were 13 children. It took rescuers more than 3.5 hours to extinguish the fire that covered an area of 600 square meters . Meanwhile, Interfax news agency quoted local emergency medical sources as saying that the death toll had risen to 25, while 66 people were injured.

The fire started at a car repair shop on the side of the highway in Makhachkala on the evening of August 14, then spread to and caused an explosion at a nearby gas station. Two of the eight tankers containing gasoline exploded. Russian Deputy Health Minister Viktor Fisenko has arrived in the Republic of Dagestan.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said the victims would be flown to Moscow on a special flight if necessary. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
