Italy's data protection agency announced on November 22 that it has begun a fact-finding investigation into the practice of collecting large amounts of personal data online for use in training artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

The Italian government said the investigation aims to assess whether online sites have put in place “adequate measures” to prevent AI platforms from collecting large amounts of personal data for algorithms. Following the investigation, the Data Protection Authority will take the necessary next steps.
The privacy regulator is known to be one of the most proactive of the 31 national data protection authorities in assessing AI platforms' compliance with Europe's data privacy regime known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), according to Reuters.
Earlier this year, the agency briefly banned the popular chatbot ChatGPT from operating in Italy over suspected privacy violations.
To ensure a comprehensive review, Italy invited academics, AI experts and consumer groups to participate in the fact-finding process, sharing their views or comments over a 60-day period.
European lawmakers have taken the lead in drafting rules aimed at setting global standards for technology that has become key to almost every industry and business.
France, Germany and Italy recently reached an agreement on AI regulation. These governments support voluntary commitments, but the codes of conduct and transparency must be legally binding on AI providers in the European Union, regardless of their size. The agreement is expected to accelerate negotiations at the European level, with the hope that draft regulations could be approved next month.
