James Maddison out long term

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed midfielder James Maddison will miss the majority of the 2025/26 season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury to his right knee during a friendly against Newcastle in South Korea on 3 August.

James Maddison will miss most of the 2025/26 season.

Maddison had only just entered the field in the 75th minute when he had to be carried off on a stretcher in the 83rd minute after a minor collision with Anthony Elanga. Tests showed that he had torn knee ligaments and would need surgery in the next few days, before entering a lengthy recovery period.

"We will accompany James during his recovery process. The whole team sends our best wishes for his quick and strong return," Tottenham announced.

It is a major blow to manager Thomas Frank, who is set to make his Premier League debut against Burnley next weekend in the opening round of the 2025/26 season. Maddison was a mainstay in last season's Europa League campaign, despite missing the final stages with another knee injury.

Combined with an ankle injury that kept him out for nearly two months from November to January, Maddison is entering the new season with lingering scars from the previous one. The loss of this "midfield brain" will force Spurs to quickly find a replacement if they don't want to start the season in a shaky way.
