Rybar channel said that the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) have now captured more than 80% of Pokrovsk city, making the battle seem predetermined. However, the Ukrainian side does not think so. President Zelensky not only did not order the withdrawal of troops but also requested a full-scale counterattack. According to Ukrainian sources, the situation in Pokrovsk seems to have “turned 180 degrees” once again. The Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) not only declared that they were “not surrounded”, but also surrounded the Russian forces, leaving some Russian soldiers “trapped with no way out”.
This was part of a plan drawn up by General Sirsky, Commander-in-Chief of the AFU, with the intention of using the "encircling Wei to save Zhao" tactic. By encircling the Russian forces at the "Dobropillia salient" (north of Pokrovsk), General Syrsky wanted to force the main Russian forces that were participating in the decisive battles in the Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad urban areas to return to support. According to the plan, General Syrsky required recapture, or breaking the siege of Pokrovsk within seven days, which meant that the AFU needed to wipe out all Russian troops that had entered the Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad urban areas. The Ukrainian military announced that the encirclement in Dobropylia had been tightened, with hundreds of FPV UAVs constantly scanning overhead, and under pressure from the AFU advance, Russian troops at the “encircled salient surrendered en masse.” At the same time, the AFU side also used UAVs carrying loudspeakers and leaflets to demand the immediate surrender of the Russian army. Ukraine also took advantage of the rainy and muddy weather of autumn and winter to trap the Russian army and hinder Russian reinforcements. From the Ukrainian information, the situation seems to be “tilting” in Ukraine’s favor. However, the biggest question now is whether Russia will follow the scenario that General Syrsky and his staff have outlined?
The RFAF’s capture of the “Dobropillia salient” resulted from the AFU being “absorbed” into the Pokrovsk offensive. The Russian offensive in the “Dobropillia salient” was precisely to prepare for the decisive battle in Pokrovsk. Currently, the AFU claims to have surrounded the Russian forces there, but the RFAF has surrounded both Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad. Compared to this, it seems that Ukraine is the overall loser and has only won a small victory. General Syrsky's current hope is that the main Russian force will abandon Pokrovsk to reinforce Dobropillia, but this is unrealistic. Russia has deployed 170,000 troops in Pokrovsk, and even if they need to be rescued, they will not need to redeploy all of them. Furthermore, based on the Kursk operation, the RFAF had the ability to mobilize other forces for rescue without having to mobilize main frontline forces, thereby disrupting the progress of special military operations on other fronts. In fact, the RFAF had deployed four marine brigades to replace the 51st Army in the “Dobropillia salient” since mid-October, so that the Army could “wholeheartedly and wholeheartedly” attack the Myrnohrad urban area. As a result, they captured a series of important targets, considered the core defense line of the AFU in Myrnohrad. Ukraine's hopes were therefore clearly unrealistic. In fact, Russia had dropped countless leaflets on Ukrainian positions; thousands of Ukrainian soldiers were trapped in the two urban areas of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, and surrender was the way to save their lives.
Meanwhile, the Telegram channel SHOT released a video of Ukrainian soldiers surrendering near Pokrovsk. The footage shows a Russian soldier escorting a group of Ukrainian soldiers through a burnt-out forest belt, after which the interrogation of the prisoners begins. Prisoners said they had no more food or ammunition, and their superiors had cut off contact with their unit. One Ukrainian prisoner said: "The house I was hiding in was destroyed by artillery and FPV drones. I decided to surrender." Another said: "There were many wounded, there was no evacuation. There had been no troop replacements for two and a half months." At present all attempts by the AFU to break out of the encirclement in Pokrovsk have been unsuccessful. Those who surrendered, including new recruits, were captured mainly in the east of the central region and the Prigorodny district.
Earlier, the representative of the Russian Defense Ministry stressed that the situation of Ukrainian forces trapped in the areas near Pokrovsk (Donetsk) and Kupyansk (Kharkov) continues to deteriorate rapidly. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that surrender is the only chance for Ukrainian soldiers to survive. According to the Russian newspaper Vzglyad, the attempt to withdraw AFU units from Pokrovsk has caused significant losses and has been unsuccessful. In Pokrovsk, the Ukrainian defenders have been completely isolated, after their supplies were cut off, and criticism of AFU commanders has increased amid the fierce fighting.
