According to information from Pu Luong Nature Reserve ( Thanh Hoa ), based on field survey results from 2016 - 2024, the study has identified a comprehensive list of amphibians and reptiles, with a total of 103 recorded species, including 40 species of amphibians belonging to 8 families, 25 genera and 63 species of reptiles belonging to 14 families, 43 genera. One of the most notable contributions of the study is the new records, reflecting the still hidden richness of the area, with four species recorded for the first time in Thanh Hoa province: Occidozyga lingnanica (Lingnan dwarf frog); Vietnamophryne orlovi (Orlov dwarf frog); Zhangixalus dennysi (Denny tree frog) and Pseudocalotes brevipes (Short-tailed ground dragon). Among them, the most prominent are the Linh Nam Gourd Frog - a round-bodied frog with smooth skin that makes a strange sound; the Orlov Dwarf Frog - as small as a fingertip but with a very unique camouflage color; the Denny Tree Frog - often hiding in the high layers of leaves, with bright eyes that stand out at night; the Short-tailed Dragon - a creature with a strange shape, resembling an "ancient lizard", rarely appearing in front of humans. Not only that, 30 species were recorded for the first time in Pu Luong Nature Reserve, including 12 amphibian species and 18 notable reptile species such as Leptobrachella namdongensis (Nam Dong Eyebrow Toad), Tylototriton pasmansi (Pasmans Patterned Toadfish), Python bivittatus (Ground Python), Ophiophagus hannah (King Cobra), Platysternon megacephalum (Big-headed Turtle) and Manouria impressa (Mountain Turtle). These species are most abundant in less disturbed secondary forests - where moisture, leaf litter and suitable habitat are retained. Photo: Pu Luong Nature Reserve Management Board. Species are found mainly in 3 main habitats: secondary forests, impacted secondary forests and agricultural areas. Of which, secondary forests are the most important habitat, home to the majority of species, especially rare species with strict habitat requirements. Photo: Pu Luong Nature Reserve Management Board.
Among the 11 surveyed sites, the forest area near Pu Luong village has the highest species diversity with 50 species recorded. Buffer zones such as Pa Ban village, Khuyn village, Eo Dieu village have good forest quality and large area, which is where the most species are concentrated. Photo: vietnam.vnanet.vn.
