Survey of the "death road" connecting Dong Nai with Ba Ria - Vung Tau

On October 2, the Traffic Police Department of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province coordinated with the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee and Road Management Area IV (Vietnam Road Administration) to work and survey the current situation on National Highway 51 from Km40 to Km49, passing through Phu My town.

The delegation surveyed a number of locations where traffic accidents often occur on Highway 51. At these locations, it was noted that the painted lines were worn, blurred, missing in some places, and the road surface was damaged. The members of the delegation unanimously recommended that the Road Management Area IV and the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee remedy these shortcomings.

The survey team also recommended installing reflective ears on top of the hard median strip, installing soft markers to separate the motorbike and car lanes, and reducing the concrete median strip to plant trees to free up the road surface to widen the motorbike lane.

National Highway 51, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, passes through 3 localities including Phu My town, Ba Ria city and Vung Tau city. According to records, this is the route with the highest traffic volume in the province with many industrial parks and seaports on both sides. It is also the only road connecting Dong Nai province with Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, where tragic traffic accidents often occur, with a high fatality rate.

This is also the "death road" of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, causing fear for many road users.

According to statistics, in 2022, there were 45 accidents on National Highway 51, killing 32 people and injuring 23 people. In Phu My town alone, there were 39 accidents, killing 28 people and injuring 18 people. In the first 9 months of 2023, there were 41 traffic accidents on this route, killing 26 people and injuring 24 people.

This is the route with the highest number of traffic accidents in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province.

Accidents occur mainly between motorbikes and heavy vehicles, container trucks.

Assessing the cause of accidents, in addition to subjective errors from traffic awareness of vehicle drivers such as motorbikes entering car lanes, speeding, running red lights, going in the wrong direction, many accidents are also related to the structure, traffic sign system, road markings, etc.
